Dizzying masterpiece from the new kings of hard rock
2009 | Label: Reprise

This fourth studio album from Georgia-based doom metal technicians Mastodon finds the band’s penchant for progressive rock and cohesive concepts fully realized. The story of a paraplegic boy who uses astral travel as a means of escape, the album opens with the beautifully tragic "Oblivion" — sung mainly by drummer Brann Dailor — which sets the tone for the story that follows; it isn't too long before the main character gets caught in a wormhole and "lost in oblivion." From there, the boy’s soul travels through the ether into a domain inhabited by ghosts of Czarist Russia who send him to earth in Rasputin’s body. Over the course of the album the mystic takes pity on the boy, and when he is killed and both their souls freed, he helps the boy return to his body and cures him of his ailment.

While that story is, in itself, mind-blowing, the sonic execution exponentially outweighs the lyrics. Mastodon’s technical prowess has here hit its stride, Skye's 7 well-crafted compositions showcasing pure emotion in their mammoth riffs; meticulously-planned song structures move from slow-burn to crushing finale. The band’s signature dual vocals are here more focused on clean singing (rather than screaming) to tell… read more »

Credits count!

They cut me from 90 to 50 then do this 12 for 7 routine. I don't know this band. I'd chance it if I had my 90 but with 50 it's a risk. I'll try one cut and see. So Mastodon looses out on a potential customer. both the band and customer gets screwed.

One of the Best of the Year

Crumberger

I listen to a lot of different genres of music and this was my favorite album of 2009. Crack the Skye is epic. It's as technically good as an album could ever be without sounding too mechanical...still having grittiness and soul. I love the progressive rock elements, such as the edition of keyboards on various tracks. The vocals and production quality are better than their previous efforts...Blood Mountain (the album before this one) was excellent as well, and I can't decide which of those two I like more.

Why so many complaints about credits?

JonathanLaFey

This is under $5 here, while you'll pay at least double that from most other places. What's the problem?

high bitrate MP3s

1dermutt

i hemmed and hawed before downloading, worried that i'd be bummed if the tracks were encoded at a low bitrate (as many emusic offerings still are…) and thinking it might be wiser to suck it up and buy thru itunes. but each track is ~300kpbs VBR.

Put the cost in perspective.

GreatStature

This album costs the same as any other on the retail shelf. ****Tracks four and seven alone equal over 23 minutes of music!**** Twelve credits is a BARGAIN. This is coming from someone who listens to this album almost daily --just get the album as it's really really good.

12 Credits for 7 songs ?

METALMIKE

Why does Emusic continue to make us pay double for a song thats over 7 or 8 minutes, or a live song. Don't be so greedy and more people will buy more songs. simple !

Kicking at the Boundaries of Metal

By John Wiederhorn, eMusic Contributor

As they age, extreme metal merchants often inject various non-metallic styles into their songs in order to hasten their musical growth. Sometimes, as with Alcest and Jesu, they develop to the point where their original vision is at least partially consumed by their new sounds, and their albums feature as many or more elements of post-rock, prog, hardcore, alternative, industrial or jazz as they do metal. Regardless of the genres in which they dabble, acts… more »

They Say All Music Guide

First off, a warning: the best way to encounter Mastodon’s Crack the Skye for the first time is with headphones. Reported to be a mystical — if crunchy — concept record about Tsarist Russia, this is actually the most involved set of tracks, both in terms of music and production, the band has ever recorded. “Ambitious” is a word that regularly greets Mastodon — after all, they did an entire album based on Moby Dick — but until now, that adjective may have been an understatement. There is so much going on in these seven tracks that it’s difficult to get it all in a listen or two (one of the reasons that close encounters of the headphone kind are recommended). It may seem strange that the band worked with Bruce Springsteen producer Brendan O’Brien this time out, but it turns out to be a boon for both parties: for the band because O’Brien is obsessive about sounds, textures, and finding spaces in just the right places; for O’Brien because in his work with the Boss he’s all but forgotten what the sounds of big roaring electric guitars and overdriven thudding drums can sound like. The guitar arrangements on tracks like “Divinations” and “The Czar,” while wildly different from one another, are the most intricate, melodically complex things the band has ever recorded. There are also more subtle moments such as the menacing, brooding, and ultimately downer cuts such as “The Last Baron,” where tempos are slowed and keyboards enter the fray and stretch the time, adding a much more multidimensional sense of atmosphere and texture. Still, Crack the Skye rocks, and hard! Its shifting tempos and key structures are far more meaty and forceful than most prog metal, and menace and cosmological speculation exist in equal measure, providing for a spot-on sense of balance. Some of the hardcore death metal conservatives may have trouble with this set, but the album wasn’t recorded for them — or anybody else. Crack the Skye is the sound of a band stretching itself to its limits and exploring the depth of its collective musical identity as a series of possibilities rather than as signatures. And yes, that is a good thing. – Thom Jurek
