The Lemonheads revisited

michaelb1963

On of my favorite bands of the mid 90's. Evan Dando (inspite of his on stage tempertantrums - ala Trees 1996) is a musical prodigy. This expanded version of "It's a Shame about Ray" is the orginal album PLUS, many of the songs recoreded acoutically live in the studio. If you liked the Lemonheads - you must get this album

Some Real Gems

But too much filler on this "Expanded Version". Stick to the title track, Mrs. Robinson & Alison and you will get the real value here.

Dando

Rudder

Easily the most underrated songwriter of 90's Rock. SwellJoe said it all - particularly now that music is digital, it seems even more amazing that bands put out albums that were listenable in their entirity. Dando made at least three - two are non-debatable classics (It's a Shame About Ray & Come On Feel.)

A great band hits their stride

The Lemonheads were always good, but this is the album that was a perfect storm of great songwriting, good production, and tight performances. There are maybe two dozen albums that I can listen to over and over again, never tiring, never ceasing to hear or feel something new, and never feeling like their time has come and gone. This is one of those records (as is "Come On, Feel the..." and "Car, Button, Cloth"). Highlights include the title track, and "Rudderless", which has a beautiful guitar riff. It's a shame that two of their best known songs are covers (Mrs. Robinson and Luka), as Dando's songwriting holds up well against the best rock has to offer.

This is not a review, more of a rumination. I have long ago lost my cassette version of this album, having been only 15 when it came out. Somehow my embryonic musical sensibilities instinctively drew me to the Lemonheads. I will vigorously deny any suggestion that it had anything to do with the fact that my big brother had a copy of the album first. Anyway it's great to see this album on emusic. It brings up warm memories of clear plastic cassette tapes.
