A fascinating mix of anger, sweetness and stoned brilliance
Label: Comedy Central Records

Though it's funny on its own, it's probably best to consider Intimate Moments as a companion piece to Kanye West's watershed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The riffs about hanging out with West in a club and partying with him at his house are priceless and lend a certain humanity to one of hip-hop's most unknowable geniuses (though his ego remains in tact — when Ansari walks into West's house and catches him listening to 808s & Heartbreak, the rapper's only response is "These beats are dope!"). The rest of the album is full of Ansari's fascinating mix of anger, sweetness and stoned brilliance, highlighted by his outrage over shows on MTV ("A lot of stuff on that network is not my cup of tea, mainly because I don't like huge pieces of shit in my tea") and his love of Craigslist ("Give me a hand job, I'll give you a coffee table — that's Craigslist!").

Not very clever

dsm.14

After the priase from other reivewers, I found this disappointing. I think this CD's appeal diminishes with every year older than 20 you are. He picks easy targets and is not very creative or witty in attacking them. Hannibal Burress and John Mulaney in this age group are much more clever. Perhaps because of the success of his tv show, he seems to be smug and playing it safe.

I didn't know about Aziz until Community, had no idea he had this out until someone posted it on facebook. Glad I found it.

Hilarious!

I normally like stuff like Bill Hicks and George Carlin because their stuff is original and usually has a message. There's no real message here, but Aziz is original, hip and one of the funniest comedians I've heard in a long time. From Facebook to Kanye to the foibles of R. Kelly, Aziz gives an energetic commentary on the things he sees in our pop culture. Highly recommended!

Man, they've got sooo many SHEETS!!

MetalFaceBrewery

Good, simple and fun album. It's not fluff but it's not deep. It is just a good ride from a damn funny guy.

A quicker Chris Rock that you could hang out with.

He's cool, but approachable. And then, fast as light he's crazy, and you're falling out of your chair. Urbane, up to date, and in tune, he's one of the best out there right now.

Support this Dude!

He helped out the Concords on their show. He is no Mitch Hedburg. But it's pretty funny.

Double contra "RAAAAAAAANDY"

RadioNDN

Having just finished listening to the album, I'd agree "RAAAAAAAANDY" isn't even close to the strongest bit, and apart from that, it's Ansari doing a character from a movie he was in, Funny People. "Gay Rights," "Sheets," "My Cousin Harris," "Harassing Harris On Facebook" or "Are White People Psyched All The Time" are more indicative of the humor here. His R. Kelly and Kanye West bits are pretty good, too. All in all, a really entertaining performance.

Contra-"RAAAAAAAANDY"

All respect to "wu" below, but I don't think "RAAAAAAAANDY" is the strongest bit here or the best indication of the album's humor. In fact, I'd suggest sampling just about anything else in order to get a feel for the material. To each his own, though. It's all hilarious.

Really good, but...

It may be damning with faint praise in some eyes to say that Aziz Ansari's comedy will appeal to damn near everybody. As a fan of Patton Oswalt and Eugene Mirman's I'm-smarter-than-you absurdist comedy, I was left wanting a little more edge from Aziz's populist, non-political humor. The closest he gets to true satire are some sideways references to the tried-and-true (people assuming he's happy about Slumdog because of his Indian heritage, American greed, intolerance towards gays), but for the most part, these tropes are just set-ups for jokes much more mundane in subject but lavish in execution. His humor is observational and humanist, but that said, the dude is hilarious and his energy is infectious. Download RAAAAANDY first and, if you dig it, go the whole way.

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »

An eMusic Guide To Comedy

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

What makes something funny? People will tell you it's timing. That's not the whole truth. Sure, the right moment, a confluence of mishaps and commentary can result in hilarity. But personality is at a premium in comedy. The person behind the timing is as vital as any open manhole or stray banana peel. Luckily, at eMusic, we've got personality by the bundle. Below you'll find a curated collection of some of the funniest folks to… more »

They Say All Music Guide

If you’re unfamiliar with the standup of the wicked funny actor/comedian Aziz Ansari, imagine a Mitch Hedberg tape sped up three ticks and then add an extra helping of snide to the routine, along with Internet-age nerdiness and some deviant ideas that are absolutely unquotable in mixed company. Here’s hoping no one misses the irony of the album’s title, because Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening stacks the rape jokes high, but Aziz’s act is, fortunately, much more than filthy. “Harassing Harris on Facebook” wouldn’t be nearly as funny if it weren’t for the man’s keen ability to put the listener in a paranoid preteen mindset while the insults thrown at MTV are razor-sharp, skewering the contestants of Aziz’s most hated show, Next. Hipsters, social network addicts, and those who practice shroomery will get the most out of the man’s thoroughly modern set, but you only need a passing knowledge of Kanye West and R. Kelly to belly laugh at the outstanding fourth quarter. Anyone who appreciates observational humor at breakneck speed must hear the comedian’s re-creation of an R. Kelly club appearance, and if that weren’t enough, Aziz’s over the top “RAAAAAAAANDY” character from the film Funny People provides the encore, which brings down the house. Providing every reason why Kanye West and Judd Apatow are both big fans, this is a fantastic, uproarious debut. – David Jeffries
