Terrific Mahler with an Historic Twist
I have several recordings of Mahler 1, but this is the first one that made me sit up and exclaim "Wow, this thing is gorgeous!" The performance claims to be the original five movement version that failed spectacularly at its premiere. Mahler was at first devastated, but bounced back with the four movement version that we all know and love. A lot of people hate this sort of thing. We should only listen to the creator’s last thoughts on the subject. I understand the point, without being entirely convinced. In fact, I’m kind of a sucker for variant editions, the more extreme, the better. Give this a try, but be clear that you will also need the final four movement version. A minor technical glitch, my first copy of the files was apparently munged during the download. There were odd bings and bongs that would have amazed Mahler. No problem, eMusic makes it really easy to download purchases more than once. My second try was perfect.
