Cap’n Jazz, Analphabetapolothology
Label: Jade Tree

Before the Promise Ring, Davey von Bohlen and his high school friends were in a scrappy act called Cap’n Jazz. Unlike your high school band, they were actually good. The songs collected on Analphabetapolothology may not sound stellar by today’s standards but impassioned rockers like “In the Clear” move at such a frenzied pace it seems as if they could implode at any moment. If nothing else, these songs proved that idiosyncratic musicianship was a strength instead of a liability in the emo realm.

The power of youth

cthorlton

This was one of my favorite bands when I was in my late teens/early 20's along with Braid, Gauge and SDRE. My musical horizons have expanded since then but I still love this chaos/control dynamic. I'm a little disappointed in myself for not buying tix to their show in Chicago during P4K with Gauge, but maybe i can get a bootleg

Dischord signed a jazz act

Bobuar

Capn' Jazz is heavy, quirky punk rock, much like many a DC hardcore band. What noticeably sets their sound apart from that niche is that they sporadically blend in a unique brand of Chicago avant-jazz that would later become more prominent in vocalist Tim Kinsella's later work in Joan of Arc. Cap'n Jazz does on occasion throw in some saxophone, but don't be afraid like I am of anything that equates with Kenny G. Their cover of "Take on Me" is noteworthy.

The excellent two-disc set Analphabetapolothology collects the entirety of the Cap’n Jazz oeuvre, assembling all of the singles and compilation tracks as well as unreleased eight-track demos and live material from their final show in their native Chicago. – Jason Ankeny
