Before guitarist Davey Van Bohlen formed Promise Ring and singer and guitarist Tim Kinsella founded Joan of Arc, both played in this eclectic and unsung Chicago band. Cap'n Jazz deserve props not only for their gnarled, impassioned songs, but also for their diverse, stylistic approach. Instead of rooting their emotional expulsions in post-hardcore, the musicians expressed themselves in a more accessible alternative/indie rock framework. At the same time, Cap'n Jazz experimented with meter and dynamics, navigating angular moody paths on their way to emotional exorcism. This double-disc set contains the band's complete catalogue along with previously unreleased demos and live cuts from their hometown farewell show. It's a worthy find.
