Four Tet at his most shamelessly gorgeous
2010 | Label: Domino Recording Co

During the five years between Four Tet albums, Kieran Hebden has kept busy. His indie rock listeners are probably aware of his improv work with jazz drummer Steve Reid but just as important — particularly to There Is Love in You — is that Hebden has also been flexing his DJ chops. (Fans should seek out his May 2008 set for Resident Advisor's podcast, an illuminating look at his dance floor tastes, ranging from dubstepper Benga to Chicago house pioneer Ron Hardy to the rattling acid techno of Matthew Herbert's Audion alias.) In the middle of 2009, he released a 12-inch collaboration with Burial, "Wolf Cub"/"Moth," that cross-hatched both men's unique styles almost evenly.

There Is Love in You isn't a dance album, per se, though most of it is built on straightforward, if subdued, house rhythms, from the lovely glitches that swirl through "Sing" to the ringing, gorgeous, cut-up female vocal of "Angel Echoes," whose sample-slaw technique recalls New Jersey garage king Todd Edwards. But that opening number's feet-planted awe echoes throughout the rest of the album. The strikingly titled "This Unfolds" bubbles with bell-tones and acoustic fingerpicking over lazy snares reminiscent of Reid laying back, before… read more »

Overrated album

I found this extremely disappointing. Except for Circles, I couldn't get into the hugely repetitive songs. BORING! I've like almost all past albums and am shocked at the almost universal acclaim of this. Time to go back to Bonobo....

Help me understand...

Come someone explain to me what I am listening for here? I enjoyed earlier albums, but have found them exponentially less satisfying with each subsequent release. This one sounds totally uninspired. Lazy even. Like anyone with a computer and weekend to kill might have mashed this together and called it music. I find it just boring. But you all seem to sing praises.. what am I missing?

Four Tet-What more can u say.

UncoolMusicCritic

At this point, you can not go wrong with any Four Tet albums. Each one is different and Kieran Hebden keeps getting better and better. Can't wait to see him in Chicago.

Brainy - in a good way.

Complex layers of diverse sound. I find something new with each listen.

Skeptical at first

werewolfgang

I was used to the folksie-indie feel of "Pause" and "Rounds" and a little skeptical of his new sound. But I was blown out of my seat by the very first track! It was unflinchingly beautiful, right down to the last track.

First, but not last

Mogomuse

This was my first purchase of music by Four Tet, but it won't be my last. I'm intrigued by the textures he creates. I saw a couple of "behind the production" videos from Future Music magazine where he explains some of the creative process behind 2 of the tracks. It's fascinating. Will be looking into more of his music in the near future, I assure you!

Summer

Had some reservations at first. I do miss the acoustic and organic sounds that usually characterize Four Tet, but as the temperatures start to rise, this album is growing on me. Four Tet made a summer record!

Another Gem

One of the most innovative electronic artists I have heard... Full album recommended, its best listened to that way. After the 3rd time around, you may be hooked. Personal favorite is "This Unfolds". If you like this, Try "Rounds" and then "Everything Exctatic".

Why Dance Music is Bigger than Ever

By Michaelangelo Matos

In 2010, the unthinkable occurred. I was 35, and I had never been so excited about electronic dance music. That's not usually how it works — dance music's turnover rate often leads to early burnout even among diehards, and particularly among diehards over 30. But throughout the past half-decade, dance music has been both cutting-edge and conscious of its own legacy; an irresistible combination for anyone who wants to have a good time first and… more »
