This is ABSOLUTELY superb ...

... especially the performance of Media Vita itself, all 25 minutes of it. It is an amazing performance of one of the truly great pieces of English Music, dating from immediately before England's musical power-house was snuffed out by the Protestant reformation in the 1560s. I consider Stile Antico's performance even better than the ground-breaking performance by the Tallis Scholars 20 years ago, and that is saying something! "Grath's" earlier review prefers the Tallis Scholars. However, I now find their performance somewhat relentless ... AND they are not even on emusic!

Sheppard's Media vita is one of the miracles of the Tudor period, and it is sung beautifully here, but without the clarity and projection of the reading by the Tallis Scholars. Nonetheless, this is a marvelous anthology of Sheppard's music.
