A pitch-perfect exemplar of indietronica
2010 | Label: morr music / Morr Music GBR

Along with peers The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio and Ms. John Soda, Lali Puna are one of the progenitors of a crackly, diffuse brand of electronic music sometimes called "indietronica" — a sepia-toned blend of indie-pop craft, glitchy textures and bookish diffidence. On their previous album, 2004's Faking The Books, the group (Valerie Trebeljahr, Markus Acher, Christoph Brandner and Chistian Heié) considerably upped the rock quotient of this mix, but on Our Inventions Lali Puna has returned to the melancholy melodies and subdued organic electronics of old. It may be over-reading things a bit to suggest that this is the result of this being the first album since Trebeljahr became a parent, but it's hard to deny that many of the tracks have a pronounced lullaby feel to them (especially "Safe Tomorrow", "Rest Your Head" and the twinkle, twinkle keyboards of "Hostile To Me"). The gentle float and breathy melodies of Our Inventions masks darker intentions, though, and eventually lyrics like "Their kingdom's gone/ Just ruins and plain desert" reveal themselves from the cottony hum. It's been a long time since indietronica has been capable of genuine surprise, and Our Inventions, accordingly, contains few, but it… read more »

Warm / Cold, Cool!

MonsterDad

Again, that great combo of warm/sexy vocals, cool/cold electronica with gentle melodies. Sure, it sounds a lot like their other stuff, but their other stuff is great, too!

Gentle yet stimulating

This album is good for fans and newcomers; it's actually the first Lali Puna album I've enjoyed. Everything is right. Now I think I might go back and see if I didn't miss something the first time. An appearance from Yukihiro Takahashi (ex-YMO) is a plus.

They Say All Music Guide

Lali Puna’s previous album, Faking the Books, was a drastic change for a previously subdued group. Most of its songs featured electric guitars in a prominent role. Some of them, at various points, were loud. On Our Inventions, following a break of six years, guitars go back to supplying texture, while programmed rhythms and synthesizers, with delicately struck vibraphones, rule the album’s makeup. Not one of the songs is louder than a lullaby, the ideal setting for Valerie Trebeljahr’s vague, charmingly awkward, and clipped lyrics and whispered vocals. There are no real standouts, no (relatively) big hooks as heard on Scary World Theory’s “Lowdown”; instead, there is a steady stream of hushed electronic pop songs that is as easy to enjoy as it is to ignore — and be struck with the thought that, at some point, your mood lifted a bit. On the closing “Out There,” Trebeljahr is joined by Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukiro Takahashi, and the two voices complement one another with such sweetness that a full album of duets sounds like the best next step for both of them. – Andy Kellman
