Acrassicauda, Only the Dead See the End of the War
2010 | Label: Vice Music / The Orchard

Whether it's Dee Snider tossing an irate parent out a second story window or the members of Mayhem burning down old Christian churches in Norway, metal is — in its very DNA — confrontational music. So it's perhaps no surprise that Acrassicauda, the Iraqi thrash band generally regarded as the country's first metal outfit, ran up against their share of conflict. Initially performing stealth concerts under the Hussein regime, the band actually gained more enemies after the American invasion, when the country's hard-line Islamic elements accused the group of being Satanists — or, worse, Western sympathizers — and threatened to kill them. They were turned out of their home country, forced to live as refugees in both Syria and Turkey before arriving safely in the United States in 2009.

Backstory is one thing — and Acrassicauda have already proven to have both physical and emotional fortitude and willpower — music is another matter. Fortunately, as their provocatively-titled Only the Dead See the End of the War EP proves, Arcassicauda are not simply floating on lore. Its four songs have all the power and potency of classic thrash — think Slayer or Bolt Thrower or Napalm Death. The… read more »

Wow

These guys are very impressive. Their style is one of a kind, but you can still hear influences of Metallica and Testament. I love all 4 tracks, and constantly listen to this album more than once a day. This is a definite buy!

Top notch metal - these guys have improved a lot since their documentary. I guess not having bombs destroy your practice pad helps. I fucking love this EP. It's heavily influenced by (good) Metallica, the singer sounds like he's trying to emulate Hetfield. "Only The Dead See The End Of War" is crunching, aggressive metal and I've had it on repeat in my mp3 player since it came out. Get it!

Acrassicauda managed to escape their war-torn homeland with some talent and a hell of a PR hook. This, their debut four-song EP, isn’t much different from the work of a zillion young U.S. or European bands; it’s the sum of their influences, with a few glimmers of originality here and there. Middle Eastern rhythms and vocal chanting crop up, notably on “Garden of Stones” (which also features a coiled-snake guitar solo from Tony Aziz), and “Massacre” begins with a brief spoken prelude in Arabic. But there’s more Metallica and Testament (whose guitarist, Alex Skolnick, produced the record) here than anything else. Vocalist Faisal Talal has a pretty evocative and multi-dimensional voice — he can shift from clean singing to a clenched-throat roar that recalls Lair of the Minotaur’s Steven Rathbone, and the guitar riffs are loaded with ’80s thrash crunch. These guys are classicists. (In a possibly unintentional tribute to Metallica, Acrassicauda’s drummer, Marwan Riyak, is the weak link — he always seems to be slightly lagging, and never throws anything truly complex or intricate into the mix.) They throw a few slightly more modern touches into the EP’s final track; “The Unknown” features slightly more downtuned, minimal riffing during the verses, and Talal tries on a brink-of-madness vocal in the style of Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, while his bandmates deliver gang shouts on the thrashy chorus. – Phil Freeman
