This is
a really great opera. It's performed brilliantly on this recording and the sound quality is plenty good enough for most of us. It was on repeat in my car for about three weeks at one point and I never got bored with it.
Great historical recording (1955)
This is a relatively old recording made in Vienna in 1955. Conducting by Josel Krips (who re-established the Vienna State Opera after the World War II) Cesare Siepi (as Don Giovanni) is perfect as the seducer, not quite libertine enough. Lisa della Casa is excellent as Donna Elvira; her voice is pure and easy. The early stereo recording - of course, digitally remastered - sounds surprisingly good for its age. The pity is the absence of tracks on all 3 CD's...
