breathe deep the smoke from my burnt offering
Extra Life blend aggressively twisted, thorny, dramatic math-rock with strong, genuinely pretty -- almost American Idol-ish, yet geeky -- vocals and melodies. The lyrics are very smart and very creepy (especially the rising-zombie declaration of purpose "Easter" and the Special Victims Unit bad-guy narrator of "the Ladder"). The sonic aggression is cut with two excellent accessible-though-weird pop singles, "Head Shrinker" and "Black Hoodie", that make maximal use of the band's cellist.
