Trippy and kaleidoscopic, textural and weird, Phantogram spins sexy, synth-laden pop
2010 | Label: Barsuk Records

If you've ever found yourself wishing that The xx spent less time singing about sex and more time actually having it, Phantogram may be the answer to your spaciest psych-pop dreams. Trippy and kaleidoscopic, textural and weird, the Saratoga Springs-based boy-girl duo can spin sexy, synth-laden pop with the best of them. But where other acts tiptoe, Phantogram surge, blending hip-hop, shoegaze and electro-rock with a slick city-life coolness that belies their small-town start.

At heart, this is a duo that doesn't shy from contradictions. There are songs that work well for both body-rocking and zoning out, others that seem to come from too many places and still others that come from nowhere at all. From song to song — even from verse to verse — there are surging shifts in paradigm: a gargled lament subsides to hypnotic samples ("Running from the Cops"), or a shoe-bent mumble morphs into an all-out laser show ("Turn It Off"). Seconds later, keyboardist Sarah Barthell is sampling mid-century brass ensembles, worshiping at the altar of My Bloody Valentine or serving up the sort of jam-worthy beats that would make both Aaliyah and Daft Punk proud.

It can seem schizophrenic, sure — but in Phantogram's shifting, psychedelic… read more »

Stands out

raindogs

I stayed away from this for a while because I knew they were a duo from the east coast making modern synth pop, which I assumed meant they would sound exactly like all the other bands Pitchfork loves. In some ways they do - the 80s pop influences are all there - but the hooks and the lyrics really set them apart. I've found myself getting deeper into this every time I listen to it. Worth your time.

Best in years!

This is the most exciting album I've heard in years. The layers of sound and vocals will keep you interested over and over; lyrics are rich. Can't wait for more.

Starry Eyed Trip Pop

JA

At first a detroit hip hop sampler, then Hooberphonic like guitar makes way for Portishead like vocal meanderings. Finally they all soar together in a glorious mish mosh, recalling the best of these bands, as well as some of their same limitations. This is Eyelid Movies and Phantogram delivers a truly enjoyable listen. Heres my interview that I conducted with them at Culture Collide Fest in Echo PArk, LA this past summer. Enjoy! http://www.vimeo.com/16875478

Interesting

RenaissanceMan

It took me a couple listens, but I really enjoy this record. It's a neat combination of styles that I won't try to list.

Awesome HipPop!

Radstarr

Great hiphop beats and awesome vocals, both female and male! I love what they do here on this record. Heavy rap beats and poppy modies, sometimes borderline haunting. Worth the DLs!

Good, but...

I just have to point out how ridiculously much this sounds like I Am the World Trade Center. Not kidding - listen to the first two tracks, go listen to I Am the World Trade Center, and tell me if that is not the darnedest thing you've ever heard. Naturally, if you like this, you would like I Am the World Trade Center, unless the resemblance is simply too uncanny for you.

Intriguing and Subtle

Muse8

Intriguing, subtle, melodic and groove-oriented. Quite a musical range on offer here as well, and the female vocalist has a charming style that draws you in.

Addictive!

tungstenblues

Excellent mixture of synth pop, hip hop and some loose shoegaze moments. It's incredibly catchy and accessible. Top quality pop! The first part is more upbeat then it slowly turns down the energy. Check out: When I'm Small, Running From The Cops and Turn It Off to get you started. Please discard The XX reference in the review above, these guys are not bland and/or boring like that band.

Smash HIt

This album is an early--very early--leader for album of the year honors. I'll be surprised if it lands outside of my top 5 by year's end. Faaaantastic!
