Clogs, Veil Waltz
2010 | Label: Brassland

Chamber ensemble Clogs offer up this gorgeous EP as a precursor to their upcoming full length, The Creatures In The Garden Of Lady Walton, due in March. Clogs, who formed at Yale in the late-90s and feature The National's Bryce Dessner, have been quietly releasing somber, post-rock informed chamber pieces since 2001. The Veil Waltz EP finds the group pairing clean, subdued guitar picking with elegant bassoon arrangements to great effect, resulting in a collection that is both sophisticated and sweetly ethereal. If the EP is any indication of the strength of the forthcoming full length (which is slated to feature appearances from Sufjan Stevens and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worde) – it will surely be an album to watch for.

Very relaxing!

I'm a big fan of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and music like theirs. I downloaded several tracks that I liked from the Clogs' Creatures In The Garden Of Lady Walton in addition to tracks 1 and 5 on this album which I wish were longer. They remind me of one of my most favorite pieces of music by Carl Orff. The album is Orff-Schulwerk Volume One-Music Poetica. I have CD's of all 3 volumes of the Orff-Schulwerks and I see that eMusic has them as well. I urge you to check them out, particularly the first few tracks on Volume One. I plan on downloading more music from the Clogs. A great new find for me.
