Interview: The Wedding Present

By Elisa Bray, eMusic Contributor

"There's a little bit of me in every song," states Wedding Present main man David Gedge. Since the striking heartbreak of "My Favourite Dress" on the Weddoes', as their fans affectionately refer to them, 1987 debut LP George Best, Gedge has never held back from baring his heart, consistently capturing love's intensity, unrequited love and infidelity. It's what led John Peel to declare: "The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of… more »

New This Week: The Shins, Esperanza Spalding & More

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

I've been back from Austin for about 48 hours, but my body is only just now starting to adjust to things like normal sleep patterns, being stationary for long periods of time, and not drinking beer every day. Soon, I will stop having dreams that I am being chased by a giant, furious side of brisket. I look forward to those days in breathless anticipation. Until they arrive, here's this week's New Arrivals: The Shins, Port… more »

They Say All Music Guide

The Wedding Present have always been a dynamic and exciting live band and that energy is captured on the two concert recordings featured on Live 1988. The sets recorded in Valencia, Spain and Rotterdam, Holland have much overlap, mainly consisting of early singles and songs taken from their first album, George Best. Some songs from 1989’s Bizarro were in the set list for the Valencia show and it’s fun to hear early airings of great tracks like “Kennedy,” “No,” and the epic “Take Me!” David Gedge and the group are predictably full of fire and manic energy throughout; the trebly guitars of Gedge and Peter Solowka sound almost unhinged at times. It’s a shame the recording quality wasn’t just a little bit higher, as sometimes the bass is quite muddy, the vocals lost in the mix, and the guitars painfully thin. It can be a bit of a struggle making it through the whole set in one listen, but when the performances are so strong and the songs so good, a less than pristine sound is easy to overlook. – Tim Sendra
