Hooks splintered into fragments and floating into the ether somewhere
2010 | Label: Columbia

If you can make it past the massive hooks on MGMT's breakthrough single, "Time to Pretend," there's a couple telling lines. Frontman Andrew VanWyngarden admits that the Brooklyn duo is "fated to pretend," but that's okay because "everything must run its course." In other words, dudes know exactly what they're doing, right down to positioning Congratulations as their "experimental LP," a middle finger to anyone expecting another Spectacular slab of prismatic pop songs.

Not that there aren't hooks here. There are plenty, actually; they're just splintered into fragments and floating in the ether somewhere. Take "Siberian Breaks," a 12-minute epic that plays out like a promising series of song sketches. Lurking beyond the fake accents, hazy harmonies and sudden synth stabs is our bruised narrator, shouting into the void, "I hope I die before I get sold." A rare moment of clarity in a record that refuses to sit still or reveal its true calling (is it a concept album? an elaborate prank?), it all but confirms the drug-munching, model-scoring prophecies of "Time to Pretend." At least it does until "Brian Eno" kicks in, plowing us all over with a cheeky paean to the greatest shape-shifting producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist of all time. And… read more »

Why the bad reviews?

Steve1280

With the exception of the "one-star protest," I do not understand the reason for the bad reviews. I think this is a mature album for a young band and speaks highly of the quality of music that is coming out this generation (as opposed to the end of the last decade). The melodies were well thought and the instrumentation was wonderful. This is my favorite release this year. I would place this album in the vein of Grandaddy and Mercury Rev. Forget about being "radio friendly." Radio is for the old "kids" who want to hear Sublime over and over and over again for another 15 years. This download is a must for those who like well-crafted ALBUMS. For those looking for a bunch of hits, look elsewhere.

Too cool for me

UncoolMusicCritic

My review is late-however don't waste your credits on this record. This record is way too cool for most people. If you lack the "cool factor" you will most likely be denied access to the download. I tried to download it myself, but was denied. I tried to find someone who was "cool" (a smelly long haired, berk wearing patchouli using hippie chick). Now I'm sorry I wasted my time. Oh that's right, I downloaded it for free from the local library. Then deleted it. Now that the hype is over, hopefully we will not ever hear of them again.

More Than Pretty Faces

jamesg7392

I saw them at Seattle's Block Party and it is weird to think they were the same band to release Oracular Specacular but having a guest appearances with the Flaming Lips latest album it also shouldn't come as a surprise. This album has elements of Love. My favorite tracks are "Someone's Missing", "Brian Eno" and "It's Working". The only question what will the next album entail?

Don't waste your downloads

I thought Oracular Specacular was a terrific record. Every song on this record feels like MGMT played one thing for 8 measures, then changed to another thing...then has the audacity to call that a song.. THis record is not cohesive at all. Its bad

Reclamation Point

dmdstrhalo

I thought the first album was alright, but this one seems stronger, or at the very least, more unique. It's a VERY adamant declaration of the band's role in deciding who they are and what they sound like, and not being defined by the expectation of others. definitely takes you on THEIR trip.

Congratulations indeed

My hat's off to these guys. They managed to avoid the sophomore curse by releasing an album that completely defies expectations and moves the band forward in leaps and bounds both stylistically and artistically. The song subjects and musical arrangements are varied, surprising, and enchanting.

Weird in a good way

kamaleialoha

It?s not as catchy as Oracular Spectacular, but it?s still really good. At first I only liked Brian Eno and Congratulations, but the other songs are growers. Except for Track 6.

Congratulations!

On a nice follow up piece to Oracular Spectacular. Love this band!

Great Song

'Brian Eno' has to be the best song of 2010 so far - in my opinion. Wildly inventive.

Ummm....

I like this better when it was a different band and they were called Belle & Sebastian. I liked MGMT better when they were a novelty act. This just isn't enjoyable at all.

What I Like: Alt-Country & Otherwise

By Scott Taylor , Software Engineer

This station will eventually have programs that fit into "themes" - maybe 3 hours of Train Grooves (!).... but for right now I just wanted to put together of program of music that I like and sort of defines my aesthetic. Most of these tunes feature an acoustic guitar or a southern accent. Some of them have Jenny Lewis. And any chance I get to listen to anything with Emily Haines in it, I do.… more »

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »

They Say All Media Guide

After the smashing success of Oracular Spectacular, it was clear that MGMT were going to be at a bit of a crossroads when it came time to follow up. Would they try to simply re-create their single-rich debut and pray that they avoided the sophomore slump, or would they continue to evolve? Fortunately for the listening public at large, they opted for the latter, delivering a follow-up album that matches, if not triumphs over, their earlier work. Always moving forward, MGMT have stepped out from the shadow of sonic auteur Dave Fridmann, producing the album themselves with the help of Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom. The end product is a sound that owes more to Phil Spector than the Flaming Lips, managing to be atmospheric without necessarily being spacious. It also feels like the band has taken a more dynamic to songwriting on this album, tossing aside the dancing thump of “Electric Feel” and “Kids” in favor of songs that build in a more deliberate and satisfying way. “Flash Delirium” folds upon itself again and again, ramping up to a Wall of Sound chorus before letting loose with a big, glam/garage finish, as if to vent off any excess musical pressure before heading into the more subdued “I Found a Whistle.” This kind of careful songwriting tracks all throughout the album, giving Congratulations a more cohesive feeling. While this kind of musical vision means there isn’t really a clear-cut single, it does make for an all-around better album. MGMT have matured as a band, and to show that off, they’ve returned by making the album that they wanted to make rather than the collection of loosely related singles that was expected from them. From the opening moments of the sublime “It’s Working” all the way to the titular closer, Congratulations is an incredible follow-up from a band that is still maturing into some unknown entity. [The album also had a vinyl release in 2010.] – Gregory Heaney
