Finally sounding like a band rather than a collective
2010 | Label: Arts & Crafts / IODA

A few years back, when the ever-growing Broken Social Scene reached an all-time high of 19 members, there were so many Canadian rock stars performing with the Toronto-based indie-rock collective, it was difficult to remember which ones, exactly, were in the band. Singer-songwriters Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning? Check and check. Feist? Emily Haines from Metric? Amy Millan from Stars? Yes, yes and yes. Neil Young? The dudes from Rush? The National Orchestra of Canada? Probably not, but hey, with such an unruly lineup, you'd never know.

So it's refreshing that, on their fourth full-length, they've scaled back to just seven core members — including Drew and Canning — and, as a result, the music's regained some room to breathe. BSS still exhibit a flair for high-drama builds, from tiny upright-bass tremors to a full thunderstorm of guitar feedback and crackling electronics, but now, instead of glossing everything over with layered synths, they've heightened the texture of every last plucked string.

Part of the credit goes to producer John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and the Cake), a guy who knows the power of playfully jazzy arrangements. Where Broken Social Scene's early albums felt like stellar mixtapes, careening between airy pop ballads and… read more »

S'okay

The issue I have wih this and other BSS recording's - they tend to cover the same ground, both thematically and musically, over and over. Don't have the patience for this record as much as hoped for.

Okay

If you have followed this band since their debut, you can't help but feel that all their material has been second rate and effortful ever since. This album is list-enable but hardly memorable.

Still an important band. Love the instrumental "Meet Me in the Basement". You must see the media mashup video for Basement if you haven't. "All to All" has Blonde feel to it while Ungrateful Little Father has a Prince funkiness with a cute keyboard noise. This album supports my theory that Canadians have taken over the alternative music genre. I love the horns on "Arthouse Director". There something for everyone on this album and less meandering than the self titled album.

Even if you never heard of BSS before...

Buy this album. Truly one of the best albums of 2010. The mixture of pop, rock and just honest-to-goodness musical talent will make you fall in love.

I Finally Get It

Quentcomps

I listened through every previous BSS album, and they just never clicked with me. This one has gotten a lot of repeat listens from me, though. One of my best of the year.

These guys know how to write a song

I appreciate that their songs don't all sound the same with the same tempos and such. There's areason they've been around awhile

I doubt it gets much better.

Even though this BSS album doesn't devolve into spirals of noise nearly as much as previous efforts, it still retains the essential sound of this excellent excellent band. The gleeful profanity? It's there. The explicit inappropriateness? Also there. Texico B****** bounces so hard it makes you want to jump. But there's meaning too. World Sick is sweeping and epic, and Sweetest Kill is just beautiful. Put it on a mixtape for that kid you got a crush on this summer. Some songs are just basis indie rock, but basically good. Love

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »
