There's an attractive madness to their sadness
2010 | Label: Infinite Best / Revolver

There's a haze that floats over Twin Sister's second EP, Color Your Life. It's almost indescribably melancholy, so wise and lived-in you may be surprised that this Brooklyn by way of Long Island quintet is just barely into their twenties. But they are, and they are already mastering a gorgeous kind of dream pop, though this isn't like any of the lo-fi shitgaze hypnagogic slop that dominated much of the conversation in 2010. Twin Sister are aiming for something more demure, and maybe a little richer. Lead singer Andrea Estella sounds like a cross between a soft Kate Bush and a hard Laetitia Sadier, and her songs, especially the mid-album twin killing "Milk & Honey" and "All Around and Away We Go" flirt with propulsion and impermanence. Sometimes her voice is pressed up in the mix, other times it wallows below the surface, a whisper to a moan and back again. It's early yet for Twin Sister, but there's an attractive madness to their sadness.

I see what you mean, but I think that's really part of their charm.

Potentially fantastic

Some great ideas, good band, smoky grooves (or something like that) and interesting textures, but good gravy those vocals are so out of tune that half of this is barely listenable.

Big Ugly Yellow Couch Radio

By Big Ugly Yellow Couch, eMusic Contributor

Big Ugly Yellow Couch is an acoustic video series run by photographer Donald Rasmussen and writer Carlye Wisel, two goons with an ugly piece of furniture and a relentless desire to help expose unbelievable artists to energetic fans. Stemming from the idea that phenomenal music can be stripped down to its core and remain just as impressive, the duo seek out bands they love-love-love-love, and record stripped-down sessions on a dead old lady's couch they inherited… more »

Anagrams

By Maris Kreizman, Audiobooks Editor

"Anagrams" is the name of one of my favorite books - it's clever and heart-wrenching at the same time.I like sad songs you can dance to, and I like sad songs you can cry to. I like girl groups and electro-pop and Brit pop and twangy torch songs. I'm still haunted by some of the songs that I was obsessed with when I was a kid. I think "twee" and "deep" are not mutually exclusive. more »

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »
