All you need to know about the irresistible debut from this Milwaukee combo you can get from the cover: a lively magic-marker drawing from imaginary soul superstar Mingering Mike that, like all of Mike's work, conjures the R&B of a bygone era. Kings Go Forth are just as proudly stuck in the past: The songs on The Outsiders Are Back don't just conjure mid '60s R&B, they actually sound like they were recorded back then, too. It's an impressive feat: You can almost hear the dust fuzz on the needle and feel the yellowed cardboard sleeve in your hands. Luaka Bop could pass this off as a "lost soul treasure," and no one would be the wiser.
Fortunately, though, Kings Go Forth aren't some forgotten band from decades past that never got their due: Helmed by recordhead and soul obsessive Andy Noble and boasting the astonishing vocals of one Black Wolf, Kings Go Forth were formed in 2007 with the sole purpose of delivering late-night busted-bar R&B, sewn up with grimy guitar leads and locked down with clattering rhythms.
