Transforming British rock classics into wrenching soul anthems
2010 | Label: Anti/Epitaph

Bettye LaVette doesn't just cover other people's songs — she tears them apart. With a powerfully raw voice that reveals every one of her 64 years, this R&B belter transforms any British rock classic into a wrenching soul anthem. She pours the sad-and-loneliness back into easy-listening chestnuts like the Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin." She strips the Who's "Love Rein O'er Me" down to its core, revealing its rhythm and blues roots. When she rasps her way through an emotional rendition of Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy," you believe what she's singing. Nothing came easy to LaVette, who's been working her way back into the spotlight ever since 1972, when Muscle Shoals, Alabama's historic FAME studio, scrapped her debut album without explanation. But all that struggle and survival is what makes her music so rich. When she plays "Maybe I'm Amazed," she slows everything down, sounding out every word, as if it's hard for her to accept the kind of love Paul McCartney's singing about. That's LaVette's special genius: taking a standard that's been played a billion times before, and helping you really hear the song again.

Bettye LaVette Interpretations

EMUSIC-0242B2F1

I love Bettye LaVette singing the phone book or the song book. For me she is always the best because she does it in her style. All praise to others but here for me is the sound and interpretation I want to hear. With no disrespect I lived through the Brit Invasion. I do not remember being impressed. I remember phone books so I am old enough to remember being able to understand the words of songs. It is nice to hear the words of the these songs sung with passion.

I saw ms. Lavette for the first time on Jay Leno. She got a standing O. She got that and tears from me also for a job well done.

Powerful

You won't like this for how Ms. Lavette adheres to the original version of the songs. If you want that, go listen to the originals. But if you want to hear a supremely powerful voice interpret these songs and make them into something arresting and new, prepare to be moved.

Dreadful!

I had high hopes. But honestly, it sounds like she heard these songs for the first time in the morning, had lunch, then recorded them in the afternoon. Her "interpretations" show no understanding of these songs at all. She may as well be singing "Bicycle Built for Two" or "Camptown Races." The selection and engagement with material is abysmal.

Didn't like some of the tunes as done originally, but like her interpretation.

Not for me, very depressing, there is soul and then there is soul turned really blues. Did not recognize songs.

Could Have Been Better

I thought this was a great idea for an album. I didn't think it measured up. The music accompaniment was more like easy listening genre when it was covering rock songs. Bettye seemed to just speak the words or sing in her style without retaining the original melody of the songs. If I wasn't familiar with the words of these popular recordings, I wouldn't even know she was singing those songs.

Nice idea, but needed an editor

About a third of this record is really fulfilling, a third so-so and the other third unlistenable. That last part isnt necessarily due to BL. Rather, the world simply doesn't need to hear ANY more versions of "Dont let the sun..." or "Nights in White Satin", even if we can dig up Howlin Wolf or Hank Sr to sing them. That said, some of the less nauseous tunes sound just fine, and the production thankfully shies away from over embellishment and pompous arrangements. You dont even have to preview this record to know which tracks to pick. Trust me, you'll likely get all the best ones the first go round.
