The product of a different band, but you'll want to drag your boombox into a cow pasture and serenade the sod
2010 | Label: Brown/Fat Possum/Columbia

On Everything All The Time, Band of Horses' shimmering debut, vocalist Ben Bridwell's high, lonesome howl felt frantic, heartbroken: "At every occasion, I'll be ready for the funeral," he promised, slamming a guitar. Infinite Arms, Band of Horses' third album, is the product of a very different band (Bridwell is the only founding member left) and, maybe more importantly, a very different Bridwell. On the swooning opener "Factory," he bids a sheepish farewell to all that angst: "Looking back now I think it's finally time for me to laugh about it," he croons. "Time gets wasted in this misery."

Infinite Arms is no less earnest than its predecessors, but Bridwell sounds peaceful and unhurried here (on "Neighbor," his plaintive vocals even evoke Iron and Wine's Sam Beam, indie-rock's reigning Whisper King). Rockier outbursts have been toned down in favor of dreamy, California-style pop ("Blue Beard" feels like it came straight from a bungalow in Laurel Canyon), and for the first time, Bridwell nods to Brian Wilson more frequently than he does Neil Young. There's a pleasant winsomeness to these tracks, which are nostalgic in a quiet, easy way (like, say, flipping through a high school yearbook, or spending… read more »

Uh...

Is "Laredo" just "Weed Party" with new lyrics. I'm not a musician, but that's what it sounds like.

this effort lacks emotional intensity in my opinion

Meh pretty much sums it up...

"Cease to Begin" is one of my all time favorite records, so maybe it's unfair to compare this to that, but... "Infinite Arms" has some great tracks, but it isn't as consistent as the first two. Is that terrible? No, but I really only listen to about 6 of these songs on this one-- the rest sort of drag on. I mean, any album you get 5 good songs or more should be considered a success, but this isn't as good as their other efforts in my opinion.

Meh.

To hear the full album, just go to Abercrombie and Fitch. This is the type of boring psuedo indie sound they blare full blast. Love Band of Horses. But this one is a snoozer.

The Big Time

Infinite Arms is a rock and a hard place for me. BoHs' music had always felt genuine and sincere. Although I believe they are on the cusp of being let into the Big Time I feel the production is pandering to a wider audience. Making the overall creation more acceptable to more people. Is this good, is it bad? To me it seems a loss of sincerity.

Like Being Born Again

wondawful

Just like the music I listened to the first few years of my life (ahh, the 70s). This guy's voice is always so distictive. This album's fab. You had me worried, you Gloomy Guses.

It may not be their best but in my opinion it still puts majority of artists to shame.

Great American Roots Rock band

mpgoroff26

This album doesn't have any cuts as good as Funeral or Is There a Ghost from BoHs first two stellar albums, there are a bunch of great American roots rock songs that will remind you on Neil Young or Tom Petty. Check out Compliments, Laredo, Factory, or NW Apt.

just because it's not the same...

...doesn't mean I can't like it anyways. Yes, it's true, this doesn't exactly sound like what we've come to expect from Band of Horses. There is less of the rowdy stomp of the Southern alt sound, and more swooning choruses, and layer upon layer of harmonies. But different really doesn't equal bad in this case, not at all. I feel like I'm listening to my new favorite band, rather than the newest album from an old standby. The songs are calmer, maybe a result of newfound maturity, but the emotion Bridwell's voice always manages to capture so well is still there, especially on Laredo and Compliments, my personal favorites from the album. Don't just write this one off, go ahead and give it a chance. It really does not disappoint.

What I Like: Alt-Country & Otherwise

By Scott Taylor , Software Engineer

This station will eventually have programs that fit into "themes" - maybe 3 hours of Train Grooves (!).... but for right now I just wanted to put together of program of music that I like and sort of defines my aesthetic. Most of these tunes feature an acoustic guitar or a southern accent. Some of them have Jenny Lewis. And any chance I get to listen to anything with Emily Haines in it, I do.… more »
