I luv Lewis Black- fan for many years. This is good- but not as strong as his previous work. Start anywhere though for an introduction if you're unfamiliar with Mr. Black,

Best Black Yet

TYCOSAMSPO

I cannot believe I used to not like Lewis Black's humor. Every performance is better than the last. This is the best yet. Smart, funny, real.

Addicting to say the least. One of the best cynics of all time. Yes mellowing out but we all do.

Mellowing Out?

Perhaps it's because W is not longer President, as he mentions it in his routine, but compared to his earlier CDs/DVDs, he is fairly mellow in this album, which makes it an enjoyable, but not essential album.

Amusing

Although he is great or shall we say rather good, his sting stays on key at the right time.

I have eclectic tastes in comedy. From Bill Cosby to Eddie Izzard, Paula Poundstone to Don Rickles. These folks get me laughing till the tears come. Lewis Black is the same. He skewers everything from the TSA to selections of milk. He does use powerful language, but like Richard Pryor, the words are used as vibrant seasoning, not an overbearing sledgehammer performance. Lewis squirms, winces, points his fingers and yells at just the right pitch. He is terrific.

An eMusic Guide To Comedy

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

What makes something funny? People will tell you it's timing. That's not the whole truth. Sure, the right moment, a confluence of mishaps and commentary can result in hilarity. But personality is at a premium in comedy. The person behind the timing is as vital as any open manhole or stray banana peel. Luckily, at eMusic, we've got personality by the bundle. Below you'll find a curated collection of some of the funniest folks to… more »

They Say All Music Guide

After decades of working along the margins of show business, Lewis Black has become a bona fide star of standup comedy, a turn of events that seems to puzzle him as much as it pleases him, judging from his 2010 album Stark Raving Black. In his bit “Mainstream Comedian,” Black marvels at the fact his bitter, apoplectic rants are now considered acceptable entertainment for the masses and goes on to describe a benefit gig in which he was sharing a bill with Vince Gill and Amy Grant, a combination that previously would have been considered some sort of practical joke. As fate has smiled on Lewis Black, he’s begun to moderate his trademark anger just a bit, and while there’s no shortage of foul language or cranky bellowing on Stark Raving Black, he seems to be leaning more on dynamics, and trying to let his quiet moments speak as clearly as his full-on blasts of venom. It’s telling that Stark Raving Black was recorded during a show in Detroit, a city hit especially hard by America’s economic downturn, and the precarious state of the nation’s finances and leadership sets the stage for much of the material. This might account for the lighter touch Black applies on some of his routines, but when he twists the knife as he talks about the infinitesimal differences between Republicans and Democrats, the irresponsibility that led to the collapse of the housing market and the lack of support for alternative energy, Black is as powerful as ever, and remains one of the most potent standup comics at work in the 21st century. Stark Raving Black may find this master comedian lining up his shots with a bit more care and caution, but when he pulls the trigger, his kill count remains truly impressive. – Mark Deming
