More than just shoegaze purists: The secret's in the singers
2010 | Label: Vagrant Records (US)/Ghostly International

School of Seven Bells' excellent second album, Disconnect From Desire, kicks off with the best My Bloody Valentine homage in years: squealing-banshee synth samples, futuristic, industrial sonics and droning, fuzzed-out guitar riffs. But this Brooklyn trio — featuring identical twin singers Alejandra and Claudia Deheza and ex-Secret Machines guitarist Benjamin Curtis — are more than just shoegaze purists; they're one of the most exciting electronic-pop bands around, and they prove their mettle with a collection of 10 tuneful tracks that mix the forward-thinking sensibilities of Radiohead with the goth-romance of Joy Division. No wonder U2's The Edge is a fan.

The secret is in the singers. All throughout Disconnect, Alejandra and Claudia weave huge swaths of seductive, intertwining vocal melodies, particularly on the propulsive "Heart is Strange" and the lilting, album-closing ballad "The Wait." Guitarist and knob-tweaker Curtis drives the songs home with flickering electro beats and heavy, reverb-soaked guitar riffs — which, paradoxically, give songs like "Babelonia" a lighter-than-air feel.

This kind of music has never put much of a premium on lyrics — the guitars and the noise are the principle pleasures. But Alejandra imbues School's songs with a literary goth romance. Sometimes it works: On the… read more »

Beautiful!

Jackfigures

I've never heard of the band until I heard "I L U" on the radio. It seems like a lot of reviewers aren't digging the album, but that comes off as confusing to me. It's a great atmospheric album. Catchy beats and nice lyrics. Well worth the price!

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS - DEFECTIVE TRACKS

DrewDive

This rip was made using FHG encoder and NOT the LAME encoder as promised in eMusic ToS. Spectral analysis shows a 16.2KHz cutoff. This means it sounds like crap. Shame on you eMusic...this is just bullsh*t!

Okay, okay ....

SavagePopster

Please don't judge this album by your first impressions--you'll really be missing something. Like a number of "community" reviewers, I was initially underwhelmed, especially compared to My Cabal (or even Secret Machines). I thought this album was good, but not great. Now--at least a week since the last time I played it--I have been forced to reconsider. There is something very compelling about these songs. Yes, of course, we may all judge some songs better than others. Still, over the entire recording, the rhythms are compelling and the melodic singing is sweet, with just enough hooks to make it feel like smart pop music. I was tempted to give this 5-stars, but I'll save that for their next release--I'm certain it will be even better.

Consistently enjoyable...

Ouzelum

...from start to finish, this album is dripping with nostalgic 4AD-style goodness. The synths in Dust Devil and Bye Bye Bye will make you smile, promise.

Their best so far

Graywalker

A consistently enjoyable album, with a few songs that are knock outs. Unique and beautiful through and through.

Still Smiling

Audislave

I wasn't expecting much but I took a try and fell into a vast ocean of the most beautiful music. When I realized it inspired me to chills, the smile just creeped up on me. Amazing.

Step Up

ChimbleySweep

S7B step up to the plate and make a solid shoegaze album that is highlighted by the wonderful vocals of the twin sisters. I wish they would utilize Curtis' guitar a bit more though.

Trancelike

MonsterDad

this one creeps up on you. At first you think, "Oh, another post-shoegaze with some nice girl harmonies," but if you keep listening you enter a trancelike state, and a big smile emerges. Headphones a must!

Kanine Records Radio

By Kanine Records

Kanine Radio is a mix of the best songs of the '90s and new indie (2000s) bands that resemble that great '90s indie sound. In this mix you will hear a lot of my favorite songs from early in the '90s up until what I'm still getting excited about. The '90s were my favorite era of music, so it is no surprise that the bands that are turning me on now resemble that great '90s… more »

School of Seven Bells

By Alex Reynolds

School of Seven Bells guitarist Benjamin Curtis cut his teeth playing with his brother Brandon in the rock trio Secret Machines. But in 2007, he split from the band to form School of Seven Bells with another pair of siblings: twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. Their debut album proved Curtis had life beyond Secret Machines: Alpinisms was a gorgeous collection of shoegazey pop with electronic beats and Alejandra and Claudia's angelic, intertwining vocal… more »
