A woozy dream-pop debut that couldn't sound more quintessentially and brilliantly California
2010 | Label: Mexican Summer

Bethany Cosentino moved to New York to become a writer and boomeranged back to her native Los Angeles to pen woozy dream-pop that couldn't sound more quintessentially and brilliantly California. On Best Coast's full-length debut, Crazy for You, Cosentino and industrious L.A. indie rocker Bobb Bruno mix reverb-drowned surf guitar with hip-swiveling '60s shoop and the lo-fi girl-rock of '90s bands like That Dog. It's primo beach-blanket bop with a loveable quaint streak: more Annette Funicello than the Situation.

Like gender-flopped Beach Boys songs, the 13 lazily gorgeous tracks on Crazy for You are obsessed with boys. But love isn't idealized in Cosentino's universe — it makes her sleepy ("Crazy for You"), mentally disheveled ("Goodbye"), and apologetic ("I'm sorry I lost your favorite T-shirt, I'll buy you a new one, a better one" she sings in her flatly clean, Liz Phair-like croon on "Bratty B"). Her real romance is with that essential Cali obsession — the sun — but even that relationship falls a bit far of perfection. "There's something about the summer," she repeatedly croons on "Summer Mood" as Bruno plucks out a few breezy chords, "that makes me moody."

Well..

There's nothing wrong with distortion and reverb cranked up, this is fun music.

Yes.. We get it.

halfwitch

I understand that all the songs "sound the same" but it really doesn't bother me. It's a fun album, best when under the sun. Definitely worth the try.

Not impressed

josahlin

I barely even got through the preview of this album. All the tracks sound exactly the same-- they practically all leave off on the same chord and tempo as the next song. Unless you're seriously desperate, I don't think this deserves the accolades it has received.

????

Sorry--I just don't get the hosannas I've been reading about this album. Decent lo-fi pop-punk that's already been done to death by the Dum Dum Girls, Vivian Girls, hell, Guided By Voices if you want to go back to their 90s albums. If that sounds like your cup of tea, enjoy.

Reputation Preceeds It

Derek_Shampoo

This album sounds exactly like the stereotypical indie band. Whether you hate that or love it really depends on how you feel about the stereotypical indie band.

Great Album!

djpal1

One of the best of 2010! Very catchy, melodic pop/rock. Reminiscent of 1960s girl groups. I haven't taken this one off my playlist in months.

Female Version of the Wavves

ToddinKC

There is no surprise that the lead singer from this bad is dating the lead singer from the Wavves. The music is nearly identical. It has a 60's California Surf feel to it except that the Best Coast is a little slower tempo.

medeocre pop.

How long can you live in a mediocre pop blah blah land. boring and repetitive. 4 non-blondes did this style 15 years ago, and they kicked ass at it. Why do i want a diluted complaining version with no real umph. Just don't understand why this is at the top of the charts.

Gotta Have It!

mcmannanan

I first heard clips of this on NPR and became entranced at the lyrics, the melodies and the lo-fi sound. This had me hooked almost from the beginning. Hers is not the greatest voice, but in this sound, it is a Siren's song. I don't often tell the world they NEED an album, but this one comes very close.

Cool Album

Leo2727

Pretty cool lo-fi album, if you like this you should check out their other singles. They are coming to SD in November, I'm looking forward to checking them out live!

Kanine Records Radio

By Kanine Records

Kanine Radio is a mix of the best songs of the '90s and new indie (2000s) bands that resemble that great '90s indie sound. In this mix you will hear a lot of my favorite songs from early in the '90s up until what I'm still getting excited about. The '90s were my favorite era of music, so it is no surprise that the bands that are turning me on now resemble that great '90s… more »

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »
