Burns Unit, Side Show
2010 | Label: The Burns Unit / IODA

Call it a dream team: the Burns Unit is like an 8-piece indie version of Super Friends, with diverse band members uniting to combine their individual strengths and make genre-bending music. With indie goddess Emma Pollock, folk royalty King Creosote and rapper MC Soom T among its illustrious components, the Burns Unit jams its debut album full of catchy pop gems tinged with an array of musical influences — first single "Trouble" is a folksy lament with an unexpected (and delightful!) dance-band vibe.

Quite astonishing

sailingupthewestcoast

OK, I love the songs of Karine Polwart, and I enjoy the quirkiness of King Creosote, and I think Emma Pollock's solo albums are excellent, but I wasn't prepared for quite how astonishingly wonderful this album is. The band are even greater than the sum of their considerable parts. I saw them at Belladrum and bought this as soon as I could. Every song is different, but the whole thing hangs together as a remarkably complete album. Since We've Fallen Out is heartbreakingly beautiful, the energy of Send Them Kids To War is infectious and makes the words even more probing, the vocal bit in the middle of Trouble is spinetingling (especially live) and I could listen to Helpless To Turn all night. See them if you can, and do buy this!

a truely superb album bringing together the awesome talents of Kenny Anderson, Karine Polwart Emma Pollock, Future Pilot et al. A magical journey through their combined song-writing talents; just listen to the heartbreaking Since We've Fallen Out or Helpless to Turn and be blown away. Love it.
