1972/3 was a strange period for McCartney. He had still not given the world The Brilliant Album, and his singles had been to say the least patchy affairs. Band On The Run and global adulation for Wings was just round the corner when Red Rose crept out. Wings had just finished a series of University very lowkey show-up-on-the-night gigs, making many wonder what Paul was up to. But with this album Macca came up with the goods. It's a lovely romantic thing, with Little Lamb Dragonfly being one of his most beautiful compositions and of course My Love, one of those sounds-simple-but-isn't Macca triumphs. Yes there are still the scrappy demo-ey type songs which he liked to do, but I rather like those myself. This was the bridge from yesterday's superstar to tomorrow's megastar. Worth stopping off at.
