Admittedly glo-fi, but from a remarkable composer
Label: Olde English Spelling Bee / Revolver

Now that we're in the straight mockery stage of the chillwave phenomenon, it's easy to regard nearly all releases slathered with that tag with little more than disgust or disinterest. Don't ignore or groan over Matthew Mondiles's Ducktails. This instrumental side project from Real Estate's guitarist is admittedly a prime offender in the glo-fi atrocities — sun-bleached melodies, '80s-obsessed digital loops, meandering songs about boardwalks and seagulls. But since when do we let trends get in the way of beauty? Mondile is a remarkable composer and if his songs were considered under a different set of circumstances — perhaps as a composer for short films? — he may not have to suffer the indignities of micro-genre. Landscapes is technically his first official full-length release as Ducktails, but there's loads more out there on the web. Go searching with no shame.

Genre Obsession Is Really Fucking Stupid

chordophone

I hate genre. Such a stupid way to think about music.

No trash

Grillo

I just hate how it's so simple to trash a sub-genre after a little while. It's just a style it doesn't have to blow your mind. The atrocities mentioned in the review do have a strong nostalgic flavour for many people. If you don't like the colors, look at another painting, don't trash it. BTW some of these songs are nice: check out Roses and Deck Observatory.
