A joyful celebration of life — and proof of the healing powers of rock 'n' roll
2010 | Label: Barsuk Records

Ra Ra Riot broke out as both one of the best and one of the most unlikely new indie-rock bands of 2007: a sextet of well-heeled, educated preppies who made danceable chamber-pop that revived the golden age of college rock bands like R.E.M. But their quick ascent was marred by tragedy. The band's founding drummer (and key songwriter) John Pike mysteriously died in June, 2007. Profiles and interviews focused on the band's loss; songs like their breakout track "Dying Is Fine" took on an eerie new resonance. Yet the band soldiered on, relentlessly touring for the next three years.

For a moment, it seemed like the band was coasting on their debut — after all, going three years without releasing any new music is practically an eon for the music blogosphere that relentlessly covered them. But their second disc proves they've got staying power — and the band's tragic loss has only helped them collectively sharpen their songwriting. The Orchard, produced by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, is a well-rounded collection of tunes that touches on everything from new wave rave-ups ("Massachusetts") to somber, heartbreaking ballads like the stunning "Keep It Quiet." "Too Dramatic" mixes virtuosic strings and a stutter-step… read more »

I Really Love These Guys, BUT...

GiAntCaPpucCino

I really love their EP and the Rumb Line, both amazing, but I just can't get into this album that much. I think the real difference is the fact that their previous drummer (who died) was the one who wrote the other songs. They are an amazing band to see live though!

Lovely is right

DevilsAdvocate27

Smooth and rich, with clean, lively undertones, like a nice glass of pinot noir before dinner, if I can be so pretentious. I like it better than the first album, which I also liked.

This album is simply lovely. A refreshing, soothing sound that never gets boring. They are excellent musicians.

Nice

I started Ra Ra Riot with this album and have no regrets. Vampire Weekend may come to mind but the two complement each other rather than imitate. Nice clean instrumentation and harmonies, and at times pleasantly lively. They manage to be intimate, meditative and contemplating without being depressing in any way.

Rhumb -1

SubAstute

I thought "The Rhumb Line" was a 5 star album, & I wore out the bytes with replays. "The Orchard" is a strong 4 star effort, with mostly good songs, better production & more interesting arrangements. My biggest complaint other than a couple of weaker songs is the lack of backing vocals that gave "Rhumb" some extra depth & charm. But I really can't complain much because this album is so enjoyable!

what a moron

Hey discrimate musician, how is it you can tell if someone's emotion is contrived by listening to a record? There is a direct line from Orchestra Luna and Private Lightning to Ra Ra Riot (and Sufjan Stevens and Fleet Foxes) and on that line are great songs and inventive playing. I don't presume to know what these guys were going through after the death of John Pike, and you shouldn't either - this is a great album. Being a musician should be about playing songs, and these guys are very good musicians. And if you want to hear contrived, listen to Breathe Owl Breathe's song "window". Let me put it this way; just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad music. I don't like opera, but I'm pretty sure it's good music.

Oh good... more wispy whining with un-clever Cello hooks and double fast guitar pluck gimmicks. As though you couldn't tell, this album is boring, with contrived emotion, and I strongly dislike it. If you want the real deal and amazing musicianship without the gimmicks check out "Breathe Owl Breathe" instead. Save your Ra Ra Credits. How is this at the top of the charts?

Great album all around. Perfect end of summer tunes for the dwindling supply of hot days. And 'Massachusetts' was made to go a mix CD for your friends.

Who Are…Lost in the Trees

By Laura Leebove, Production Editor

Some indie rockers simply accent their songs with strings and horns, but Lost in the Trees's symphonic elements — along with frontman Ari Picker's acoustic guitar — serve as the foundation for the folk collective's second release, All Alone in an Empty House. Re-released by ANTI- with the vocals and nearly all the instrumentals re-recorded, Empty House is at times haunting, majestic, delicate, overwhelming and celebratory. With the whole work revolving mostly around Picker's family's… more »
