Britain's brash brothers begin their unrelenting pursuit of excess
2008 | Label: Warner Bros.

By the mid-'90s, most Americans had given up on British rock, which we'd come to think of as the province of graveyard mope-poets, new-romantic mannequins and the floppy-hat guy from Jesus Jones. Yet when Oasis's debut album arrived on our shores, we relented, for one simple reason: Definitely Maybe didn't actually sound that British. Granted, frontman Liam Gallagher's syllable-stretching Mancunian accent was hard to ignore, but Definitely's full-bore guitars and cocksure lyrics felt right at home on American rock radio.

"Rock 'N' Roll Star," the album's playfully sneering opener, has all the power-chord prowess and big-dumb-fun lyricism of Cheap Trick, and the mid-tempo "Slide Away" could have been the token ballad from any number of late-'80s hard-rock acts. What really set Oasis apart, though — not just in America, but around the world — was that, at a time when most alt-rock bands were fretting about their integrity, Oasis wrote big, brazen hooks. On hits like "Live Forever" and "Shakermaker," they slipped into a melodic coma, refusing to emerge for minutes on end. Sometimes, this could be too much of a good thing — just about every song could afford to lose a chorus or two — but it also… read more »

THE LEAST important, most drunken and arrogant band to come out of the nineties!! Suck doesn't even begin to touch their stink!

one of the greatest albums of the 90's. I remember having to record the CD to a tape to play in my car. I wore out this album and These Animal Men! DEFINITELY one of the Best! I really miss this era of music!

the essence of rock and roll

shamanbart

I saw Oasis in the summer of 94 (or was it 95?) for $ 2 at the Uptown Bar in Mpls for a showcase set. About 8 songs or so from this LP. Wow! This instantly grabbed me -- raw visceral rock n roll distilled down to the essence -- attitude, groove, great song structure, lyrics from the street. F...in awesome. Cigarettes and Alcohol my personal fave.

Kanine Records Radio

By Kanine Records, eMusic Contributor

Kanine Radio is a mix of the best songs of the '90s and new indie (2000s) bands that resemble that great '90s indie sound. In this mix you will hear a lot of my favorite songs from early in the '90s up until what I'm still getting excited about. The '90s were my favorite era of music, so it is no surprise that the bands that are turning me on now resemble that great '90s… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Definitely Maybe manages to encapsulate much of the best of British rock & roll — from the Beatles to the Stone Roses — in the space of 11 songs. Oasis’ sound is louder and more guitar-oriented than any British band since the Sex Pistols, and the band is blessed with the excellent songwriting of Noel Gallagher. Gallagher writes perfect pop songs, offering a platform for his brother Liam’s brash, snarling vocals. Not only does the band have melodies, but they have the capability to work a groove with more dexterity than most post-punk groups. But what makes Definitely Maybe so intoxicating is that it already resembles a greatest-hits album. From the swirling rush of “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” through the sinewy “Shakermaker,” to the heartbreaking “Live Forever,” each song sounds like an instant classic. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
