Some sounds are Beck's, but the show is undoubtedly Gainsbourg's
2009 | Label: Because Music/Elektra

Charlotte Gainsbourg grew up as the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg, which — as anyone familiar with the louche, lascivious Frenchman might note — would have to rank as a relatively difficult childhood. So maybe that's the source of her many moods, put to good use in her accomplished acting (see her desperate, despondent performance in Lars von Trier's film Antichrist) as well as in her music. But she also had a specific bit of drama to work with as a source for IRM: a small waterskiing accident that led to a big brain hemorrhage and, eventually, a protracted period of going to doctors and weathering a surgery that could have easily left her dead.

IRM is French for the medical testing procedure we know as MRI, and there's a related sense of clinical mystery that haunts the album from beginning to end. Another thing that haunts it: Beck. The devoted L.A. genre-hopper (and professed Serge Gainsbourg fan) worked extensively on IRM, earning credits for producing as well as composing music and co-writing lyrics. Some of the sounds are unmistakably Beck's, from his pronounced backing vocals on "Heaven Can Wait" to the way the drums buckle and kick up dust on… read more »

Like Charlotte... could do without Beck

Stick-Up-Artist

I really liked Charlotte's first record. It was moody and full of echos. It was great for late rainy nights. Much of that style is intact here, but then you throw in 90's juggernaut Beck into the mix. I can't say it's all bad or I can't stand it, but I just liked the first sound. I can tell a Beck beat a mile away and they all annoy me even if they were interesting 15 years ago. I like the ones where the piano is dominant in the sound like "Le Chat du Café des Artistes"

eMusic Celebrates Elektra Records' 60th Aniversary

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Jac Holzman founded Elektra Records in October 1950, gradually growing it from a label specializing in folk and related music into one of the most progressive imprints in rock. The early home of rock giants like the Doors and beloved cult acts like Love and Tim Buckley, Elektra gradually became synonymous with "cutting edge." In the '80s, it was the home of pioneering alternative acts like the Pixies. Take time out today to celebrate the… more »
