The Peruvian cumbia style called Chica is mostly obscure, even to some world music enthusiasts, but it is an infectious thing. Once you’ve heard it, you’re in for good. Manzanita’s “Agua” is in some respects, what you might expect: frantic bongos and steel drums and cowbells. But also, there’s that psych-chanting, and Santana-esque guitar swirls, and some surf rock flourishes, and man, what else is there. This is fiercely committed haze music—as good for climbing the Andes as it is for lazing in the backyard with some cold in your hand.
