A reminder of classic '60s and '70s songs with still-relevant messages
2010 | Label: G.O.O.D. Music/Columbia

Here in the 21st century, where R&B artists chief concern tends to be getting busy in the club, it can be easy to forget that soul music was once a vital source of incisive social commentary. On Wake Up!, John Legend teams up with The Roots to pay tribute to the conscious classics of the 1960s and '70s, covering songs by the likes of Marvin Gaye ("Wholly Holy"), Curtis Mayfield ("Hard Times," most famously covered by Baby Huey and the Babysitters), Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes ("Wake Up Everybody") and Bill Withers ("I Can't Write Left Handed") that reflected the upheaval, conflict, activism and despair of that era.

Musically, this is the equivalent of a Darryl Dawkins slam-dunk: Legend and the Roots certainly have the chops, soul and excellent taste necessary to pull off a project like this without rendering the material slick or anodyne; even on the few occasions when they drastically re-tool a song (like Eugene McDaniels's "Compared to What," a 1969 hit for Les McCann and Eddie Harris) or add feature emcee spots from Common, CL Smooth or the Roots' Black Thought, the performances remain true to the sound,… read more »

Huge Disappointment

MMitch59

I think this is one of the most over rated over hyped albums of the year. I expected it to be great and really rcok but its actually quite tepid and lame. the songs you really think are going to pack a punch, dont; they're soft and boring. Legend is much to mild mannered milk toast for this material and the Roots do not save the day.

Incredibly Awesome Soul

Rockin_JimL

Deep rich soul music. What a combination that is even better than John Legend or the Roots on their own.

I Had To Say Wow!!!!!!

Every so often, there is an album that comes out of nowhere, and throws you off. When I first heard the title track, I closed my ears, because to me, No One Can Beat Teddy P.'s version. Then I calmed down and took a listen, it's not half bad. Acutally, this album is the kind of album I've been looking for, for years! It has that 70's sound that I love, and it sounds like it was well thought out. There are some stale points, like "Humanity", I love the thought behind it, it's just something missing. My two favorites are I Can't Write Left Handed (Bill Withers I'm sure is proud), and "Hang On In There". Wow!!, now that song right there, to me, took John and The Roots to a whole different level. After doing that song, I can't expect anything less! "Shine closes the album perfectly, reminding us what album artistry is all about. I doubt that the naysayers will call this album of the year, but even with it's flaws, it's mine, and worth all the downloads!!!!

A modern update of your favorite thinking man's 70's r&b... what's not to love! My faves are "I Wish I knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" and "Little Ghetto Boy"

I just can't find room in my groove revival 60's soul powered funk station for John Legend. Even the Roots (!) could not rescue him from his Kenny G of R&Bness. And if they can't, Lord help him.

Period Point Blank this is some real good music. Just sampling the tunes inspired me to download this, to get the full effect of the music, not just the sampling. I will not be sleeping on this download. John Legend and the Roots make this music come alive, it is deep moving, finger popping, hip moving good soul, r&b music, not to be missed. eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »
