Folk music as adventurous as the characters in its songs
2010 | Label: Hometapes / IODA

Michigan trio — and eMusic Selects alums — Breathe Owl Breathe's charismatic brand of folk stems as much from make-believe fantasylands as it does earnest human emotions. The group's fourth LP, Magic Central, isn't a drastic departure from their past works: It's founded on Micah Middaugh's acoustic guitar and laced with Andréa Moreno-Beals's cello, Trevor Hobbes's ragtag percussion — including various chimes and bells, tambourines and shakers — and an organic smattering of banjo, dissonant piano chords and violin. But it's slightly cleaner and more upbeat, with more focus on melody in Middaugh's conversational, often half-spoken vocals. While Middaugh's voice typically takes the lead, Moreno-Beals's contributions are also crucial — her smoky, Feist-like croon complements Middaugh and especially comes through in tracks like the soulful "Icy Cave Dancers" and "Dog Walkers of the New Age."

As with all of BoB's work, Middaugh's playful storytelling is as much of a treat as the corresponding soundtrack. In "Parrots in the Tropical Trees," his voice swoops in and out as he sings, "Tidal wave, what gives you the entitlement to wash me away?" Later, "Dragon" is about a love that others might not approve of, masked as a story about a dragon and… read more »

Love their other stuff and this album is right up there if not better. I second all the raves about seeing them live...if you get a chance, run, don't walk. Most fun show I have seen in years.

Oh Heaven made the Music scene!

Mumford and Sons were the Hot English folk/rock group this year but these guys being from Michigan are the American front runners. If you still have doubts just buy "House Of Gold" or "Icy Cave Dancers". Come on, Take a chance, It will be the best money you spent all Year. This is the Only ***** Five Star Album I found this year.

Delightful!

This cd is a joy. It's whimsical, fun, and genuine. The music has an innocent spirit about it that, in many ways, is unique to the band. Their live shows have this same spirit. If this band comes anywhere close to where you live, go see them play. You won't regret it. Their shows are so entertaining.

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Jauntily mysterious seems to be the emotion of the day on Breathe Owl Breathe’s Magic Central, which starts with “Own Stunts,” a song that balances a rollicking stomp of a chorus with a gentle, distanced air, due to singer Micah Middaugh having a bit of Nick Drake to him. Said chorus is wordless — pianos, strings, and just a feeling of space fill and empty the background — and even the bigger drum stomp later doesn’t seem to remove the feeling of potential space, even isolation. There’s almost a sense of the electronic/folk hybrids of the 21st century except without the overt electronics — instead there’s a focused, something skittering delicacy that also feels like a live performance throughout. The rolling drum breaks, distant vocal wails, and intimate banjo feel like collages rather than direct playing, something that evolves part by impulse and part by careful planning. There’s even a brief shaggy-dog tale about a dragon somewhere between Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Beach Boys, though the song “Dragon” itself is a bass-led, sly snake of a release. AndrĂ©a Moreno-Beals adds her own distinct vocal touches, with leads on “Icy Cave Dancers” and other songs varying the sound if not the overall sense of careful randomness. If some elements hover between making the best of what’s at hand and replowing furrows — one track practically repeats the drum pattern from the song just concluded before it — Magic Central still has its plus points and at times aims for the state alluded to in its title. – Ned Raggett
