Throwback Motown grooves with splashes of futuristic keyboard jams

The success of "Fuck You" could have easily relegated former Goodie Mob member and Gnarls Barkley frontman Cee-Lo Green to novelty status. But a boatload of hot beats and Green's singular voice help elevate The Lady Killer past the potty-mouthed glee of its first single. Combining throwback Motown grooves with splashes of futuristic keyboard jams, The Lady Killer is stuffed to the gills with sinister grooves and big hooks. "Fuck You" is a clear highlight, but second single "Bright Lights Bigger City" also cooks (with a big assist from the bass line from "Billie Jean"), as does "Who's Gonna Love You" — perhaps the first future-funk torch song.

Better than I'd hoped.

Cee-lo Green is becoming one of my favorite artists just for his versatility. He can lay down a serious rhyme, sing a gospel tune, and make quirky dance-influenced rock.

FYI -- this is the "Explicit" version

eMusic does very little right these days, and among their inane screw-ups, they haven't deigned to indicate which version of this album is "explicit" and which is "clean". THIS IS THE EXPLICIT VERSION. On second thought, maybe this is intentional? So that all the people, like myself, who accidentally buy the wrong version will be tempted to come back and spend more money on the other versions of the tracks? Either way -- apathetically sloppy or connivingly greedy -- it's 100% eMusic these days; i.e., 100% crap.

if you're someone who watches American Idol each week, you'll probably like this album. If you like the one single - F.U. - you'll like the album. It's all the same reconstituted soul sound. One sound, all the way through. One star.

You can never go wrong with Cee-Lo Green...Cee-Lo is an out of the box entertainer that keeps you moving and groovin' and shaking! This was definitely worth the download - but then again they all are!
