Multi-layered, atmospheric and blessed with an ethereal beauty
2011 | Label: Kanine Records / The Orchard

Formed two years ago around the talents of photogenic singer-guitarist Raphaelle Standell-Preston and keyboardist Katie Lee, Braids' debut shows all the ambition you'd expect of a band who, at 18, abandoned their native Calgary, Alberta, to try their luck in the creative hub of Montreal. If the wide open spaces of their hometown can be heard in the sonic sweep of "Glass Dears" and "Lammicken," the experimental feel (two of the seven tracks are more than eight minutes long) suggests this youthful quartet have been paying close attention to the avant-rock of Panda Bear and Animal Collective, as well as the creative spirit of their adopted home.

Signaling her intentions with the line "What I have found is that we're all just sleeping around" in opener "Lemonade," Standell-Preston is a cheeky, sexually uninhibited guide through an ethereal sonic whirlpool of shimmering guitar parts, ambient interludes and pulsing synths where a strong pop current lurks just beneath the surface. Multi-layered, atmospheric and blessed with an ethereal beauty reminiscent of the Cocteau Twins , Native Speaker serves as proof Braids know that great pop is all about surrendering to the moment.

Not about the record, but rather, the price

jcgarza71

Why is this album $5.10 rather than, say, $4.99? I know $5.10 is less than $5.53. which is what buying the songs individually would cost, but that dime over the dollar mark really just takes up another dollar when trying to combine the purchase with other albums. eMusic keeps finding ways to be the opposite of easy-to-use and convenient.

Stellar stuff

sub.strata

Layers of complexity dissolve into sweet bells. Wailing, charming female vocals twist and pull, then resolve. Mesmerizing music for repeated play. Download it all and get it into your mixes.

Good Album To...

nickjacket

download in its entirety. Its furniture music wraps its arms and legs around ambient distancing or nuance syncopation.

Kanine Records Radio

By Kanine Records, eMusic Contributor

Kanine Radio is a mix of the best songs of the '90s and new indie (2000s) bands that resemble that great '90s indie sound. In this mix you will hear a lot of my favorite songs from early in the '90s up until what I'm still getting excited about. The '90s were my favorite era of music, so it is no surprise that the bands that are turning me on now resemble that great '90s… more »
