The Swedish pop dynamo works out her issues on the dancefloor
2010 | Label: Interscope

No one can extract pleasure from pain quite like Robyn can. The Swedish pop dynamo is scrappy as hell — Even the CIA knows not to fuck with me," she purrs on "U Should Know Better", a bouncy collaboration with Snoop Dogg — but her bravado is countered by plenty of raw emotion. After all, the self-proclaimed dancehall queen explains, "fembots have feelings, too." And there's feelings galore on Robyn's fifth album, from the sweet post-heartbreak pep talk, "Get Myself Together," to "Dancing On My Own," the ultimate stalker-girl anthem of 2010. Bruised egos and busted hearts underscore the infectious beats on Body Talk, but you won't find Robyn crying about it in the corner — she's working out her issues on the dancefloor.

We dance to the beat of Body Talk

plasticcarnage

As others have said, Robyn is putting out some of the best pop to be found and it is on this album. Track after track is strong and Robyn's lyrics are both smart and accessible. Not to mention that her dance moves are sickening. Caution: Side effects of listening to this album include impromptu solo living room dance parties.

Best of 2010?

gleyshull

This is the only album that came close to LCD Soundsystem's "This is Happening". Robyn leaves Gaga, Perry, and every other diva in the dust. An all-time classic dance album.

Do you like The Beatles?

Yes? Do you like girls? Do you like ABBA? Do you dream that there's a heaven, not a mean one like Christians warn good and holy gay people will burn in for being good, but an awesome one where Blondie remixes play with audiophile versions of "Help", then that's where "Body Talk" is a smash hit. Not that Robyn would claim any of this, but it's important that people who aren't as humble and sweet as Robyn understand that she's, well, as important as pop gets, that these lyrics as as unassumingly smart as early Dylan (Oh yeah, the Boomers go, to which I say, How is "just like a woman" so freaking heavy? Answer: context and inflection.) Anyway--Robyn. Her melodic sense is as good as pop gets without turning into Rufus Wainwright. Her lyrics we already talked about, plus, she's funny. 9 out 10.

If this is cheese, it is Gorgonzola

takku

I'm more of a jazz and alt rock guy, but I do have a soft spot for good electronica, and of course I like to sing along to California Girls on the radio. I really dig what Robyn has done here, and don't think this is all that cheesy. Robyn is a bit of an intellectual in disguise and I think this record has a bit more depth than you might think at first.

Good cheese pop

To answer Muse8, it's GOOD cheese pop. If you have to listen to cheese pop, this is the one to go with.

Why?

Muse8

Why was this absolutely vulgar cheese pop recommended by emusic? Please. Emusic used to be a source to discover interesting music. Please don't dilute the offerings with generic, boring, pop trash.

if you're looking for this album to follow a theme you'll be wrong. however, if you're searching for an artist who is willing to take risks, not worry about appealing to mainstream listeners and not being just another cookie cutter singer, then this is an album for you. while not every track is a home run there are anough songs to keep you moving. 2 songs are knocked outta the park (Fembots & Dancing on My Own.) this is a no holds barred, grab 'em by the balls cd. i can honestly say Robyn is among the finest artist of all time. this cd proves it.

Loving this lately

RobotRock

A great album to get funky to. What pop should be in my opinion. However, I could have done without the Snoop Dog colab.

in between

arslonga

In between awful and the best thing ever. there's some humor here, and a few songs I wouldn't mind dancing to in a big, loud room. But overall, it seems derivative rather than original.

Slaughterhouse 90210 Radio

Here are the songs that were playing during seminal TV scenes--from Seth and Summer slow dancing to Ryan Adams' romantic cover of "Wonderwall" on The OC, to Rudy Huxtable's Ray Charles lip sync performance on The Cosby Show, to Neko Case and Nick Cave's haunting cover of "She's Not There" from the fourth season opener of True Blood. These memorable musical moments are brought to you by Slaughterhouse 90210, a blog that combines screenshots from… more »

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Robyn’s prolific 2010 culminated with Body Talk, the full-length album that featured songs from the Body Talk, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 EPs, plus enough new songs to make up a third EP. Releasing that much new music within six months was a feat in and of itself, but the fact that each part of Body Talk was so consistent made the whole project even more impressive. And, by revealing bits and pieces of what went into the final album — as well as parts that didn’t — Robyn offered her fans a window into her process, allowing glimpses of the moods and approaches that go into making an album and letting listeners get to know these songs in different contexts. Of course, Body Talk’s appeal isn’t just experimental: by picking the best of the project’s songs, it feels like a greatest-hits collection and brand new album rolled into one. Familiarity suits these songs well, whether it’s the tight, bright “Fembot,” the aching “Dancing on My Own,” or “Hang with Me,” which swoons with arpeggios that sound like falling recklessly in love, even though that’s just what Robyn warns against. Hearing the songs from the EPs on Body Talk makes Body Talk, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 feel like deluxe singles from the album, as well as its building blocks. However, different versions of these tracks, like the more anthemic take on “In My Eyes,” ensure that the album doesn’t feel cobbled together. Some songs sound even better here than they did on the EPs: “Love Kills” and “None of Dem”’s playful dancehall function more clearly as bridges to other tracks than they did before. Body Talk’s new songs also make good on the EPs’ gradual shift from fierce independence to togetherness, particularly on “Call Your Girlfriend,” a thoughtful twist on a love triangle that finds Robyn enjoying new love while being concerned for someone hurt by it, and “Stars 4-Ever,” which gives a fizzy, Euro-dance tinged happy ending to the Body Talk project. After the EPs’ conciseness, the album feels downright roomy, and maybe slightly too long; obviously, Robyn had a lot of songs to work with. Overall, though, Body Talk is more focused than Robyn, and just as bold in the intimacy it creates with listeners. – Heather Phares
