Mr. Dream, Trash Hit
2011 | Label: God Mode / TuneCore

The new Brooklyn band Mr. Dream has chosen to pick up and wield an old, little-used old shard of ’90s alternative rock: the leering, misanthropic mongoloid stomp of the Jesus Lizard. It is a shrewd moment to revive this particular roar, as the current indie rock landscape is mostly devoid of leering, locker-shoving bullies. But the best compliment one could pay Mr. Dream’s debut album Trash Hit is to say that it would stand up just as well if it were released in the heyday of Lizard and the Melvins. The guitars lurch queasily in various stages of brutal down-tuning; the drums hit with bone-cracking force; and lead vocalist Adam Moerder howls and cackles with the gleeful, mad-professor mien of someone who has glimpsed the bloody end and cannot stop giggling.

It's easily worth it

actnicholas

My ear for music was constructed during the time that this music recalls - it's undeniably there - The Pixies, Nirvana, maybe Fugazi a little. But it's just so damn good and not often enough does that pure punk sound come out these days. So treasure this gem. If sample clips of Crime, Scarred for Life, and Holy Name don't hook you in, don't bother; if they do, welcome to your favorite album of the year.

Nuke 'Em Up!!!

-00C26F62

Announcing your presence with authority is what Bull Durham's Nuke Laloosh was all about! All he wanted to do was bring the heater at all times and we loved him for his tenacity. This character relates to Mr. Dream because it's obvious this band made the album they wanted to make. Trash Hit is full of influences ranging from Nirvana to the Pixies, Buzzcocks to Failure! Yeah, these guys know how to pick'em! What really makes this album great is that it has assimilated these influences in a way that makes the album and band stand on its own. It also helps that the songs never stay in one place for too long and never out wear their welcome. I wish there were more bands out there making this type of punked-up noise these days because it sounds soo right blasting from my car stereo!

New This Week: School of Seven Bells, Trust & More

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

Man. There are just so many new records today. Also, I think about halfway through this, I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. Trust, TRST: Behind the year's worst album cover is one of the year's best records. Super goth, in all the right ways. Where my Apoptygma Berzerk fans at? Home crying? Cool. See you there. This one is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Barry Walters goes: Trust is danceable even if you're not stuck in a K-hole. Its tempos vary… more »
