"Girls, don't despair, 'cause soon, I'll be there," Sonny Smith sighs almost exactly halfway through Hit After Hit. It's an apt midpoint for the San Francisco singer-songwriter's second casually stunning album with his band, the Sunsets. Filtering non-specific 1950s and 60s beach-party rock 'n' roll through the so-hip-they're-square minimalism of Jonathan Richman, early B-52s or Violent Femmes, these 11 tracks artfully plumb the teenage libido submerged just below every movie sock hop ever.

Though Hit After Hit lacks an obvious standout like last year's "Too Young to Burn," it lives up to its title with a cadre of songs that operate at nearly that same high level. There are songs about girls who are confusing ("She Plays Yoyo With My Mind"), girls who leave with some other dude ("Don't Act Dumb"), girls from the past ("Reflections on Youth"), girls who are up for a one-night stand ("Heart of Sadness"), and the scary tough guys who may be competition for girls ("Teenage Thugs"). Whether a heart-tugging ballad ("Pretend You Love Me") or a stormy instrumental ("The Bad Energy From L.A. Is Killing Me"), Sonny & the Sunsets nail it all with wry charm, never schmaltz or coldness. "I wanna… read more »

Am I the only one...

...who thinks this might possibly be the album of the year so far? How has this not been picked up by the hype machine? I could sit here and describe production characteristics and style, but really just go listen to tracks 3 and 8. This stuff is ridiculously good! For all the hipster bait crap that makes headlines on emusic, real music like this should be getting a lot more attention. Listen, enjoy, spread the word.

Hey, Sunshine!!!

Let me introduce you to my new favorite beach album! I love everything from the little Stones-y swagger to the warm production value that makes me feel like I'm right there inside the studio! This is my first introduction to this band and I'll be looking forward to more tuneage!!!

Timeless Tunes

Hit After Hit may not have a classic once-in-a-generation caliber single like Tomorrow Is Alright's "Too Young To Burn," but the second full-length from Sonny and The Sunsets is a remarkably executed affair that registers as this group's strongest statement to date: A magnum opus of playful, whip-smart and vintage minimalism of 50s and 60s-inspired California pop sunshine. New Arrivals And Related Faves

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Today's onslaught of new arrivals offered the perfect opportunity for reflection — to take stock not only of today's big ticket new arrivals (TV on the Radio! Foo Fighters! Paul Simon!) but also to comb through the stacks for scrappier — but just as worthy — bands, and also to explore the connections between seemingly disconnected artists. There's a thematic logic to each of the sections in the hub below, and we hope you'll use… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Sonny Smith is a prolific songwriter. Understatement. Coming off the massive 100 Records project, where he wrote and recorded 200 songs in a year, most people would have taken a few years off to regroup. Smith didn’t even slow down, and with Hit After Hit, he’s turned in the best record of his career. While the previous Sunsets record leaned toward folk, both in the writing and instrumentation, Hit After Hit toughens up and reaches back to the simple pop sounds of the ’50s and early ’60s for inspiration. He and the Sunsets strip the sound down to the basics, trim away all the fat, and let the melodies and Smith’s artless croon carry the day. It’s a formula that would fail in the hands of a less-interesting songwriter or a less compelling singer, since most people need all the bells and whistles of volume, orchestration, and dynamics to keep listeners interested. Smith and the band generate all the excitement they need out of the bare necessities. Whether tackling loping ballads (“I Wanna Do It”), scorching rockers (“Home and Exile”), or midtempo frat rockers (“Teenage Thugs”), the band is tough, lean, and provides perfect backing for Smith. Tahlia Harbour’s backing vocals blend perfectly with Smith’s leads, Kelley Stoltz keeps it simple but steady on the drums, and guests like Thee Ohsees’ John Dwyer keep things popping. The record really does live up to its title; by the end, you realize that there is no filler, no wasted moments, and nothing that doesn’t feel perfect for the best imaginary pop radio station on the airwaves. Sonny Smith will never be Buddy Holly, but if Buddy were around, he’d recognize a kindred spirit. So would Rick Nelson, Bobby Fuller, or Marshall Crenshaw (who isn’t dead but still…), or anyone else who made simple but powerful pop music with brains, guts, and hooks sharp enough to cut glass. Hit After Hit is that good. – Tim Sendra
