The bird and the bee — dreamy-voiced Inara George and super producer/songwriter Greg Kurstin (Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, Little Boots) — are a perfect marriage of class and sass. On their self-titled debut, George's "bird" questions nature and cries over a broken heart while Kurstin's "bee" provides a brand of playful drum machine-fueled electropop mixed with elements of jazz.
George plays the conflicting roles of aloof seductress and fearless gal who asks — in very colorful language — for exactly what she wants. In "My Fair Lady," she coyly coos, "Do you know the way?/ I am from out of town/ I need a place to stay/ Someone to show me all around," but in "Fucking Boyfriend," she sings a chorus of "Would you ever be my, would you be my fucking boyfriend?"
Album opener "Again & Again" juxtaposes acoustic sounds — guitar, handclaps and tambourines — with glossy synth lines; "Because" sits on a catchy, low-toned drum machine groove; and "I'm A Broken Heart" is a hazy '60s slowdance number, dressed up with cymbals, chimes and horn fanfare.
