Duck Down Records hit the jackpot when it teamed the raspy Buckshot with soul-sampling producer 9th Wonder on two (soon to be three!) collaborative albums. In this inevitable but worthy follow-up, two longtime members of the Boot Camp Clik recruit a legend for an all-out war against “skinny jeans” and “rap cats [that] play guitar singing songs for broads.”
Sure, Monumental sounds like it came straight from 1995 but would we expect — or want — anything else from these guys? I challenge you to deny “Do It,” despite the fact that it loops the familiar Babe Ruth break “The Mexican.” And who wouldn’t get giggly when Raekwon jumps in on “Prevail,” which could have been a lost track from Cuban Linx?
Pete Rock, who last shined on the underrated NY’s Finest, is a natural fit for the rugged Smif-N-Wessun. These are veterans doing what they do best and no one will get in their way. The relentlessness is heard early on the record — “my work ethic is epic/ you don’t have to like it but you will respect it.” Bucktown over Petestrumentals? Yes, please.
