Layering seemingly incompatible genres with reckless, radio-friendly glee
2012 | Label: Fueled By Ramen

fun. is one of those bands that came seemingly out of nowhere to ascend to the top of the charts. Usually, those groups piggyback the steez of some other currently radio-ruling act. fun. doesn’t. On this, its breakout second album, the New York trio draws from hip-hop, power-pop, emo, ’70s art-rock, singer-songwriter balladry, contemporary R&B and Broadway; a combo you’ll likely only find right here. Singer Nate Ruess — who also writes the ardent lyrics and highly sing-able melodies — has a Freddie Mercury thing going on vocally, and Some Nights opens with a flurry of Queen-y harmonies and symphonic gallantry. But after that, all bets are off. The runaway success of “We Are Young,” the first substantial rock song in ages to not only top the pop charts but also put a justified critic’s darling, avant-R&B diva Janelle Monáe, on the radio where she belongs, is particularly amazing considering that Ruess’s first band, the Format, was dropped by the same major that now distributes both fun. and Monáe. That Arizona band teamed with Redd Kross/OFF! bassist Steven McDonald for its second album, 2006′s Dog Problems, and Ruess and McDonald continued honing their smarty-pants eclecticism on fun.’s 2009 debut… read more »

It's really sad when an album starts off great only to collapse under the weight of it's own massive production. While the first two tracks boast some awesomely bombastic vocals you have to hear to believe, by the time the album is over you just have to wonder where it all went wrong. The album's last two tracks can take most of the blame. The closer "Stars" has the potential to be a soaring anthem until the vocorder effect and other manipulations render it mechanized and soulless. That's not to say the album is a total waste. It really hits just as often as it misses. But for an album that contains one of the best songs to hit Top 40 radio in years, I was expecting the rest to be a little more...well, fun.

I can't stop listening to this album! The Format has been one of my favorite bands for years, but I didn't follow their new projects after they broke up. The other day I heard "We Are Young" on the radio (which I don't listen to much) and just about freaked! I recognized Nate's voice right away. The first 3 tracks were love at first listen, but the rest of the album took a little getting used to. The only songs I'm still not a big fan of are "It Gets Better" and "All Alone". Other than that this album is great. Really happy for these guys! They definitely deserve the success!

This was indeed fun.

I am in love with this album. Not a fan, just dl'd because it was on emusic's best of '11 list. The mix of happy pop music and really melancholy lyrics keeps me interested no matter what mood I'm in. The heartbreak in these songs, coupled with a joyous, almost JP Souza march-like arrangement make the theme of the album hang together. That is, you have to have a good time and create joy in life, even if life is mostly hard. In the words of the band, "some nights I rule the world, with bar lights and pretty girls, but most nights I stay straight and think about my mom. God I miss her so much."

some nights. is a great follow-up

My wife and I have been listening to format for years and were excited to find fun. Nate has to be one of the greatest vocalists, storytellers, and lyricists in music today. We have had aim and ignite on heavy rotation for over a year and have never grown tired of the tracks that make up the album. with some nights the band has expanded the sound - more pop but with an experimental twist and a ton of bass. check out "we are young" - "all alright" - and "stars" for starters then get the rest. great band hopefully they get what they deserve and that is a lot of accolades.

Been following fun.'s songwriter/vocalist Nate Reuss since Dog Problems by the Format and I think he's one of the most undervalued talents in music right now. His gifts are showcased again here. Lyrically he opens a vein and lets it spill out. Musically he's drawing inspiration from unexpected places. You'll hear things that sound like Queen, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, operetta, a children's choir and who knows what else. Experimental, touching and surprising. Just heard of these guys due to We Are Young? Get this and if you like it get all of Aim and Ignite and then Dog Problems by the Format, forthwith.

Six Degrees of fun.’s Some Nights

By Barry Walters, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
