  • We Say...

Steven Paul Smith, legend has it, took the name (and spelling) Elliott after the Portland, Oregon, avenue, and set plenty of his songs at familiar local landmarks; it can't have escaped his notice that Elliott intersects Division Street in Southeast Portland. Smith was one of the singer/guitarists in the Portland fixture Heatmiser (Quasi's Sam Coomes was their bassist), and for years after his death, his records were almost never played at Portland cafés and bars — it was just too painful for people there. This A-side of this single, never on an album, is one of his best songs, from its unsparing portrait of a man at the end of his tether to its delectable White Album-inspired arrangement.
