A string quartet as comfortable with Brubeck as with Mozart

We Say...
No other chamber ensemble comes to mind who is as versatile as the Brodsky, and this collection of shorter works is a great overview of their boundary-ignoring repertory, which moves from Elvis Costello (he also composed his Juliet Letters for them) to jazz, from avant-garde works like Stravinsky's still-startling Three Pieces back to 18th-century classics. Their way with modern music is powerfully brash and visceral, with a fantastic rhythmic drive and sense of showmanship; their Haydn and Mozart is polished and elegant, but no less energetic.
