They Say...
Pianist-vocalist Les McCann is heard near the peak of his powers on this edition of Piano Jazz from the Jazz Alliance series of CD's. McCann and Marian McPartland have such an interesting discussion (covering such topics as the evolution of "Compared To What," McCann's beginnings and how Erroll Garner inspired him) that it is unfortunate that little talking takes place during the latter half of the program. Musically the best selections are the three ballads (particularly "With These Hands") in which McCann gives the lyrics a great deal of sincere feeling. In addition there is a spirited remake of McCann's greatest hit "Compared To What," a pair of solo features for McPartland and three piano duets. Easily recommended to Les McCann's many fans.
