We Say...
Veteran blues singers know how to convey emotion without surrendering their underlying resilience. It's what allows their music to kick even when they've been kicked down. It's a lesson that Louisiana-born, New York City-based singer Mary McBride learned at a much younger age than most. You can hear it in the self-assured swagger of "I Got Everything," the decades-old gospel shout of "Bottle & a Bible" and the authoritative Stones shuffle of "Falling." This show, recorded at Chicago's Double Door on November 12, 2004, showcases McBride's nervous energy and natural rapport with an audience as she shares songs and stories from her two studio albums and beyond. Comparisons to Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt are not without merit — McBride evokes Joplin's improvisatory spirit and Raitt's sassy blues expertise; both are a compliment to McBride's authentic road warrior aesthetic. Her band delivers nuance; she kicks ass.
