A fascinating portrait of the waning days of fast-paced live music radio.

We Say...
If Bill Monroe was the stern, often distant patriarch of bluegrass and Flatt & Scruggs the down-to-earth folks next door, Virginia natives Carter and Ralph Stanley sometimes sounded almost like the ghosts of Appalachia past, thanks to the former’s mournful voice and the latter’s resolutely simple banjo picking. On Radio serves up a well-rounded portrait of the Brothers from 1960, as they veer from backwoods staples like “Mississippi Sawyer” and “Cripple Creek” to comedy routines (“How Far to Little Rock”), covers of fellow artists (“Shenandoah Waltz”) and essentials from their own repertoire (“How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Love Me Darling Just Tonight”), with plenty of trips to the well of gospel songs old and new along the way. Complete with original commercials and between-songs patter, the set offers a bonus in its fascinating portrait of the waning days of fast-paced live music radio.
