  • We Say...

For some bands, taking the remix option is a foolish gamble, an attempt to stretch out into genres for which their songs are neither built nor sturdy enough to handle. Fortunately, this is not the case for the California group the Submarines. The electronic reconfigurations serve their airy pop perfectly, bringing out odd pockets and corners absent from the originals. Styrofoam's giddy cut 'n' splice re-working of "Brighter Discontent" adds drama and mystery, building to a fantastically manic conclusion. By contrast, the Notwist remix of the same song opts for subtlety and silence, laying Blake Hazard's aching voice against soft synthetic burbles. That both remixes work beautifully is a testament to the song's strength and versatility.
