They Say...
With all of the technology available in new-millennium digital e-music, it seems like anyone with a processor, a computer, a burner, and a little bit of knowledge can create ambient music -- or at least some semblance thereof. Fortunately, a lot of it is excellent; unfortunately, much of it is not. It is somewhat refreshing, then, to hear true professionals. The Dark Side of the Moog series is from some of the professional's professionals: Pete Namlook, Klaus Schulze, and sometimes Bill Laswell. The Dark Side of the Moog 3 is just Schulze and Namlook. "Phantom Heart Brother, Parts I-VI" make up this 59-minute treatise on how to make e-music. This could very easily be called "Advanced Electronica 401." These intricate sound designs have dramatic and somber overtones. The textures are cold and harsh. It is outside the norm for Schulze and Namlook in that the sequences are low key. This is dark, atmospheric minimalism at its best. The entire series is essential. It will appeal to fans of Jeff Greinke, Lustmord, Viridian Sun, and Brannan Lane.
“ The indie iTunes — Hardcore music fans are migrating to eMusic, the iTunes Music Store's cheaper, cooler cousin.”
