In My Tribe

LuckieLucy

10,000 Maniacs at their best! This album originally came out in the late 80's with 12 tracks, including an AMAZING version of Peace Train! The songs are not at all dates and I believe this album could easily sell and make the charts today. I consider it to be more of a Folk type of music rather than Pop but I assume that unless it is "rock" or hip hop it his normally placed in that category. The lyrics are as socially relevant then as they are today yet even my teenage daughter hasn't too much of a clue that she is singing for a cause unless I point it out. I have the original with Peace Train..... but most of the tape and the CD are in bad shape so I downloaded it again.....great stuff!

1987 - Really?

I've liked 10KM for "Like The Weather" for that long?! Finally got the album and not disappointed at all since they sound just as good now as then. How time flies - and my hair dun flew with it!

not a bad song on it

Superb album, sung as only Merchant can sing. There's just not a bad song or even a decent song, they are all great.

FYI: why no Peace Train

KuriousOranj

The band wanted it off the re-release because of Cat Steven's endorsement of the Ayatollah's fatwa of Salman Rushdie.

No "Peace Train"

I know - but it's still a bummer because having heard Merchant's rendition of that song lots of times it's really great. I can appreciate not wanting Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens to get the royalties for the song while he's off endorsing killing people who say thing's he finds to be sacreligious (sic?), just too bad because I think it's one of her most well-sung songs (and that's saying a lot given what a great singer she is).

They Say All Music Guide

10,000 Maniacs’s breakthrough album and creative high point, In My Tribe offers a survey of social concerns, including child abuse (“What’s the Matter Here”), illiteracy (“Cherry Tree”), war (“Gun Shy”), and the environment (“Campfire Song”) — all tackled subtly and tastefully without too much preaching or pretension and in believable, real-life situations. Producer Peter Asher, whose credits include James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, provides the perfect sheen — the group’s pleasant folk-pop lends itself nicely to the ’70s-styled singer/songwriter production. In the end, the album proves powerful not for the ideas (they’ve been covered before) but rather for the graceful execution and pure listenability. In My Tribe has served as one of the soundtracks for P.C. living and was required listening on college campuses in the late ’80s. – Chris Woodstra
