  • They Say...

Somewhere between a lonely desert highway and the distant reaches of outer space travels the Red Giant, Cleveland's own purveyors of riff-heavy space rock. Indeed, some stoner rock albums claim to be about songs (not often), while others serve merely as background music for getting reeeaally baked, but rarely do the two motivations collide with such stunning and satisfying results as on Ultra-Magnetic Glowing Sound. Maybe this unique quality results from Red Giant's stylistic isolation, Cleveland having no stoner rock scene to speak of, but most likely its due to the band's nearly decade-long performing and touring experience prior to recording this, their first full CD. With no (apparent) bassist in sight, the twin guitars of Damien and Alex roam free, weaving in and out, through and around each other to create a brain-melding spin cycle of riffing ecstasy. Inventive grooves and circular riffs abound on standout cuts like "1960 Starchief," "Pervert," and the brilliant "Blue-White Supergiant." And for unadulterated space rock, look no further than the slow-crunching tension of "Kill for Condors" or the simply massive bludgeoning of "Ring of the Acid Pope." In a genre where vocals are usually an afterthought, Red Giant only seem to care a little more than most (barely), but when measured by any other yardstick, Ultra-Magnetic Glowing Sound is one of the finest stoner rock releases of the '90s.
