  • They Say...

Watching storied Boston hardcore pioneers S.S. Decontrol in New York 14 years ago, a girlfriend remarked, "What a difference a hot drummer makes for this music." Well, hardcore survived a hell of a lot longer than that relationship, and her remark is still on target. Lucky for Fifi they have Pete Finestone, who pounded the skins so well as Bad Religion's stickman from 1981-1992. True, he's accompanied here by other scene vets, guitarists Steve Dro (Angry Samoans) and Larry D. (Crankshaft) and bassist Bruce Starrett (Farenheit 451), meaning Fifi is old enough to remember the English Beat song they cover ("Mirror in the Bathroom") and competes with fellow L.A. thrashers the Adz and the Ex-Members to be the punk Asia or Damn Yankees. But it's Finestone's furious rock-'em, sock-'em drive, combined with hot production, that propels Fifi out of the pack of procrustean, passé punk pouters. True, they don't quite have the killer songs (or the incredible singer) of Finestone's old band (which he was crazy to quit), but the dive-bomb attack and the steely riffs of such burners as "Sinkhole," "Snitch," and "What a Waste" show that if Fifi is a dog's name -- it's a reliable, energetic dog in its older age.
